‘I’m an expat in the UK and have discovered a better sausage roll than Greggs’

From Greggs to Sainsbury’s, M&S, and a local bakery, a Canadian YouTuber shared her honest verdict on each sausage roll she tasted from the stores

A Canadian expat has put various sausage rolls from different shops to the test – and her top pick might come as a shock. While Brits have long championed Greggs as the ultimate destination for a sausage roll, a YouTuber reckons a supermarket alternative is actually better.

Documenting her journey to Canterbury on her YouTube channel Adventures and Naps, Alanna grabbed a sausage roll from Sainsbury’s, Greggs, M&S and an independent retailer on the high street.

Beginning with Sainsbury’s, she snapped up a hot sausage roll costing £1.60. Talking to the camera, she said: “Technically this is part of a meal and it’s not the main, it is actually the side, which… love it, and it was piping hot.

“So it’s in those like hot shelves, so it’s nice and hot.”

After taking a few mouthfuls, Alanna said of its taste: “It’s got a decent amount of filling and the filling tastes nice.

“It is still pretty flaky considering it’s just from you know of those hot shelf things. I’m actually surprised – this is really nice. I thought it would be grim, but it’s all right. [It’s] what you’d expect from a sausage roll, so Sainsbury’s, I’m impressed.”

After discovering that no hot sausage rolls were available at the M&S she popped into, she settled for a cold one instead at £3.25 for two.

Offering her verdict on the snack, she said: “I mean the filling is so good, you can tell that it’s like really high quality stuff but I want this hot, do you know what I mean? It’s the whole point of this experiment.

“Although to be fair, it is really good, like really good, I’m pretty sure I’ve had these at Christmas time and you pop them in the air fryer.”

Alanna then popped into Canterbury’s Cornish Bakery and couldn’t stop raving about their hot sausage roll priced at £3.10.

While she acknowledged that this price tag was steep, she sang its praises and recommended it for those who “want something a bit fancy”.

“This is so tasty, flaky, savoury and meaty, like delicious,” Alanna gushed.

The YouTuber then sampled what she dubbed “the OG” of sausage rolls at Greggs – and her own verdict took her by surprise.

Costing merely £1.30, Alanna appreciated how “extremely cheap” they were, although wasn’t entirely impressed with the contents.

“They’re skinner than I remember them being,” she declared. “The Sainsbury’s one was definitely bigger than this. Not to say that it’s better, but it’s skinnier than I thought.”

As she took further bites, she went on: “It’s good, this one tastes so much more like greasier than the other ones for some reason.

“And maybe that’s why they’re so good. They’re just like savoury, meaty, moreish, greasy.

“Like even just touching it with my fingers feels so much more wet than the other ones. I will say maybe not as much filling as the other ones.”

Delivering her final verdict, she added: “But I’m going to be honest, I might like the Sainsbury’s one better, that’s crazy.

“I think I do prefer the Sainsbury’s one, which is wild. I thought that was going to be the worst one.

“This meat isn’t as flavoured, it’s just like greasy pastry with slop inside which I get it, it is good, but the Sainsbury’s one felt less greasy and really substantial. And the meat was flavoured and it had nice seasoning.”
