One mum says she’s considering changing her baby’s name two weeks after her birth, despite her ‘thinking it’s really pretty’. She took to Reddit to ask other people their opinions on the situation
It can often taken parents a great deal of time to settle on a baby’s name. As well as choosing a moniker you and your partner like, you also have to find one you think will suit them in the future.
But one my says she’s considering changing her baby’s name two weeks after her birth, despite her ‘thinking it’s really pretty’.
The mum took to Reddit to ask other people advice after sharing that she had called her daughter Livia. She wrote: “My daughter’s name is Livia and my husband and I chose her name because we thought it was pretty. It’s not super common, but I have met a few women with that name.
“When I first told people her name during my pregnancy, everyone kept referring to her as Olivia. I’d have to constantly say, ‘No, it’s Livia with an L’.
“Now that she’s born, I’m still having this issue with family, friends, and pretty much everyone who asks her name. I feel like I set her up for a lifetime of My name isn’t Olivia, it’s Livia.'”
The mum continued: “I originally wanted to name her something simple like Summer or Rose, but my husband said he didn’t like those. I really fought to name her Summer but he wouldn’t budge.”
She says she’s considering changing her name, possibly to Olivia. She added: “Has anyone experienced people messing up your name because it’s really close to another name? I feel bad because I don’t wanna make her life difficult.”
People had mixed reviews on the situation, as one person wrote: “Honestly I’d probably just change it to Olivia. She will have a lifetime of that and it will be incredibly annoying. You can call her whatever you want, but just save her that annoyance.”
However, another argued: “Why? Livia is a legitimate name.”
Another person said: “I’m curious how you didn’t predict this being a problem. Olivia is very popular. She will have to correct people all the time. I have to correct people on the pronunciation and spelling of my name and it’s a pain, but also not the end of the world.”
However, someone else said: “I absolutely would not change it to Olivia. She will have a lifetime of ‘it’s Olivia initial last name’ because Olivia is so popular. I love Livia personally, it’s a super old name with its own history. I’d keep it.”
Another person agreed, writing: “Don’t give in and change it because a couple people can’t get it right. Horrible take/advice.”
The mum later gave an update sharing what she decided to do, writing: “I’ve read all your replies and thought about it more. We’re going to keep Livia because we really love the name.
“Many of you mentioned the importance of learning people’s names and not changing your name/making it easier just to accommodate others, and that’s very true. Thank you for your input everyone, I appreciate it.”
