‘I’m living in fear as neighbour says I’m too noisy – even the police are involved’

By staff24 June 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

A woman has been left living in fear of her downstairs neighbour after she accused her of being too noisy and took the drastic action of reporting her to the police – now the 29-year-old is afraid to do everyday activities

A woman is struggling with her downstairs neighbour who, convinced she’s causing excessive noise, has involved the police. The 29 -year-old now fears carrying out basic tasks in her property such as sitting on a chair, washing up or even flushing the toilet due to her neighbour’s extreme reactions.

She revealed her downstairs neighbour has consistently “pounded on the ceiling” since “the day she moved in”. While she was moving furniture into her top-floor flat at the time, which naturally creates more noise than usual daily activities, it was during daytime hours. In an attempt to maintain peace and avoid any unnecessary drama, she went downstairs to apologise and introduce herself, believing everything was fine. Unfortunately, she soon realised this wasn’t going to be the case.

On Reddit, the woman shared: “If I accidentally drop something, she bangs on the ceiling for five minutes straight. I’m putting on my shoes to leave the house? Bangs on the ceiling.

“Use the loo and flush? She bangs on the ceiling. I complained to management and nothing was done.”

The situation took a sour turn one evening when the woman was simply sitting at her dining table and painting her nails.

Her neighbour began “banging on [the] ceiling intermittently for 10 minutes.” Her leasing manager then called her regarding a “noise complaint”, to which she responded that she was “literally sitting” so wasn’t “sure what ‘noise’ she’s hearing”.

The woman added: “Next thing I know, the police show up for the noise complaint because my downstairs neighbour called them.”

The woman decided to take action to prevent her neighbour from being able to get her into trouble.

She explained: “I bought a home camera so I can protect myself because my leasing manager has threatened to escalate the situation if I can’t ‘be quiet’ even though I’m literally tip toe-ing around my apartment at this point.

“I told the leasing office to please request specific dates and times of her complaints so that I can provide footage of what I was doing during said ‘noise complaints’ and surprisingly but not surprisingly the beating on the ceiling and noise complaints have stopped (for now) since the manager and downstairs neighbour caught wind of the fact I’m recording everything.”

The woman added: “I don’t even know what to do at this point, I’m just tired of walking on eggshells in my own apartment.”

Fellow Reddit users shared their thoughts and suggestions in the comments section.

One person advised: “Call the police on her with a noise complaint and then for harassment if she continues? Especially if you have recordings to show them where they can hear the constant banging.”

Another said: “Keep the cameras rolling, quit tiptoeing. You’re allowed to live your life.” A third joked: “You didn’t get an apartment, you got cast in a psychological thriller lmao”.

In a follow up comment, the woman added: “I still tiptoe out of fear though. I live in a very affordable apartment for LA standards.

“It’s really nice for the price and in a decent area. I almost wonder if the leasing manager and her (she’s lived here for 20 years) were trying to get me out or find a way to evict me so they could get someone they know in.”
