A mum has been left outraged by the weather during a family getaway in Europe, labelling it ‘boring’ after she was guaranteed ‘blistering’ heat but instead met with ‘downpours’
The British weather can be somewhat unpredictable, that’s why so many of us flock to sunnier climates and often for a European getaway. Turkey has become increasingly popular for an affordable family holiday, offering golden sand beaches, clear blue waters and blistering sunshine, or so we thought. One mother was left absolutely devastated after their family getaway to Antalya in Turkey was far from what they imagined.
The mum of two arrived in the resort city of Turkey on Tuesday, 1 April, with dreams of beach days and time spent basking in the sunshine. Instead, the family were met with “thunderstorms and downpours.” With Turkey often promising blue skies and 30-degree heat, she was left disappointed and “bored”.
Taking to Mumsnet (mumsnet.com) to express her frustration, she wrote the subject line “S**t holiday” and expressed: “Just want a moan really. Arrived yesterday to thunderstorms and down pour which looks like it will continue on the rest of the week.”

She continued: “With DH, 8 year old SS and 1 year old DD. I’m sitting in the room in darkness and silence while she has a nap while DH and SS are going between indoor pool and arcade. Just boring and crap so far. How do I make it better if the weather doesn’t improve? Wine?”
The mum was met with comments from other parents asking where exactly they had booked, to which she replied: “We’re in Antalya. Been here a few times and always been blistering heat so really didn’t expect our home town to be warmer this week!”
In response to another reply about wine “being the answer”, the mum added: “It’s also the first holiday for the 1 year old so I had some high hopes and perhaps some very unrealistic expectations. DH keeps texting to ask if I want to swap but SS much prefers to play with his dad than me which is understandable.”
Many other parents sympathised and shared their own experiences of disappointing weather. One user wrote: “I had this once – luckily not a whole week, about 3 days. Ended up buying wellies for my DS and we splashed in puddles and played on the beach in between the rain.
“We went to tourist tat shops and bough a cheap toy each afternoon, so something to look forward to and a new thing to play with in the hotel room. It is a bit grim, but you’ll survive it, and hopefully you’ll get some sunny spells.”
Another offered some advice: “Just enjoy not having to do normal chores, the 1 yr old won’t remember anything, research local indoor museums, anything really a stunning church boat with a roof trip.
“You can’t change the weather, you can choose to sit in your hotel room as the staff where do locals take kids when it’s raining see if they have any fun suggestions.”
One more suggested: “Hire a car or check out public transport options and go on some adventures. You’re surrounded by great places from nature trails to waterfalls, really cool roman cities, land of legends if you’re up for a theme park. I’d go out somewhere every morning then back for lunch, naps, indoor pool etc, then it’s your usual holiday evening.
“It’s a massive shame to have gone all that way, spent all that money and seen nothing but the hotel room pool and arcade. Might as well explore a little, the weather’s ideal for that.”
