‘I’m the King of Sunbeds – one habit will get you thrown into the pool’

Johnny Seifert, 32, from Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, has become a self-styled expert in the art of poolside etiquette, and has revealed his top rules for a relaxing day by the pool

The Sunbed king
Johnny Seifert has claimed the crown of the King of Sunbeds for himself

The self-styled ‘King of Sunbeds’, renowned for his knack for securing the prime poolside spot, has warned towel hoggers that they face being launched into the pool.

Johnny Seifert, 32, a seasoned traveller, has accumulated a wealth of tricks to optimise sunbathing opportunities. Hailing from Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, the showbiz journalist and content creator has earned a name for himself with his savvy advice on snagging the best sun lounger.

Now, the expert has decided to share some pearls of wisdom on poolside manners – how to be an ideal sunbather without irking your neighbours. If all sunbeds are claimed by towels but remain unoccupied, he suggests waiting an hour before removing the towels.

According to Johnny, bringing a full-sized pizza – or any grub that necessitates cutlery – to munch on a sunbed is a definite faux pas. He also advises families or large groups of friends to secure clusters of sunbeds instead of a line – to minimise disruption to others.

Johnny has a strict set of rules when it comes to sunbathing

Johnny stated: “I’d clockwatch for an hour, and if nobody comes to use the bed, sorry – it’s mine now. You can just claim you didn’t realise it was theirs. As for food, I don’t mind you nibbling on breadsticks, or maybe one slice of pizza.

“But a whole pizza, anything smelly, or if you’re sat there gobbling a salad with mayonnaise dripping down your face, go to a table. Anything that is eaten with a knife and fork, don’t be eating that around the pool. Drinks are fine of course!”

For groups, Johnny suggests sitting in a circle rather than a row to avoid shouting down a line and disturbing others. He said: “It’s just about finding ways not to disturb everyone else.”

According to Johnny, taking short calls by the pool is acceptable if you’re using headphones. However, playing music on loudspeaker is not allowed, and video calls are a definite no-no.

He advises: “Listen to your music, or do your long phone calls, in a private place. I don’t need to hear your life story while you’re sat on a deckchair. And with music, I decide what I listen to, not you. Give us some peace and quiet!”.

At hotels with multiple pools, Johnny believes parents should keep their children at the kids’ pool and not let them stray to the adult section. Even for adults using the adult pool, he stresses that there should be no splashing or disruption.

Johnny said: “I want peace and quiet – when I’m ready for kids, I’ll sit by the kids pool. And no matter which pool, if you can see people lay down with books, don’t splash around too much.”

He also cautions against inconsiderate umbrella use, advising that you should position it in a way that doesn’t shade anyone else. Lastly, Johnny has one non-negotiable rule: no wearing tiny speedo swimming briefs by the pool. While they may be suitable for sports, lounging by the hotel pool is a different story altogether.

He insists: “No men should be wearing those. We don’t need to see everything! Especially when they bend over to pick up their flip flops. On holiday, by a hotel pool, there’s no need for that.”
