Wayne Rooney was sacked by bottom-of-the-table Plymouth Argyle on New Year’s Eve, with the ex-Manchester United and England captain likely to be followed by a key ally
Neil Dewsnip is expected to leave his role as Plymouth Argyle’s director of football following the sacking of Wayne Rooney.
Rooney, 39, was dismissed on New Year’s Eve with struggling Plymouth sitting rock bottom of the table on nine-match winless run. The Manchester United legend had only been in charge since June, mustering just four wins in 23 Championship fixtures.
It was longer than his previous managerial spell which also ended in disaster, having only been given 15 games by Birmingham City before he was sacked in January of last year. Plymouth’s decision to part ways with Rooney was mainly down to results but also the club’s poor recruitment, as the impending departure of Dewsnip suggests.
The Mail report that transfer chief Dewsnip will be following Rooney out the door after not being spotted at Home Park for Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Bristol City. The 63-year-old former England youth coach has been at the club since 2019 and helped Plymouth climb from League Two to the Championship under managers Ryan Lowe and Steven Schumacher.
Schumacher’s replacement, Ian Foster, only lasted 16 games as Dewsnip took charge on an interim basis before Rooney was hired. The former England captain has been unable to change Argyle’s fortunes, having struggled since their promotion to the second tier.
Rooney gave a special mention to Dewsnip in his statement following Plymouth’s decision to sack him. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, in particular Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip who I shared great relationships with,” he said.

“Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who make the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as Head Coach and I wish them all the best for the future. To the Green Army thanks for making the games at Home Park so special, they are memories that we will share forever.
“I would also like to give a special mention to my coaching staff Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan and Mike Phelan for their knowledge, dedication, help and support. Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results.”
