Important Wi-Fi alert issued to all UK homes – check your router and follow 5 rules today

By staff21 June 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

It’s going to be the hottest day of the year today and that’s bad news for your Wi-Fi router.

UK homes could face a day with dire downloads and dismal broadband speeds. Although the current heatwave is great for those summer drinks, BBQs and topping up the tan, the hot weather can wreak havoc with the internet.

In fact, the team at Broadband Genie have just issued an alert saying things can be over 25% slower on warmer days than when it’s cold.

Worst affected are upload speeds, with these dropping by up to 27% when the sun shines.

One of the biggest issues with Wi-Fi is when the router overheats. Like all technology, these flashing black boxes really don’t like getting too toasty and can shut down completely if left in direct sunlight.

“We’ll most likely see a dip in broadband speeds over this hot spell. You may see a network engineer propping your street cabinet door open with an umbrella to provide it with some shade to help keep it cool,” the Broadband Genie team explained.

“Broadband companies design and test their equipment to operate in and around temperatures up to 40°C. If users can keep their broadband router below this, we’ll avoid a wave of mass broadband blackouts.

“Customers should check their router isn’t placed in an unsuitable spot, such as next to any sunny south-facing window or a sweltering loft space. A couple of minutes taken here will save your broadband grinding to a halt, avoiding any broadband-related frustrations.”

If you want to keep your broadband in tip-top shape during this weather, then here are 5 rules to follow

Router Placement

Getting your router in a good spot is key to better speeds. Get it away from heat, but don’t tuck it in a cupboard as this will also block the signal.

“We know it sounds obvious, but avoid placing your router in direct sunlight or hot spots around your home,” Broadband Genie explained.

“Ideally, you want it on a flat, hard surface, raised 30cm off the floor for the best performance.”

Keep It Ventilated

Routers aren’t the most aesthetically pleasing piece of tech, but avoid locking them away in cabinets or tucked between big pieces of furniture. Keeping your router in a well-ventilated area will avoid any broadband burnouts.

Attention Animal Lovers

“Your pets can find the most unusual spots (such as your router) a comfortable place to have a nap,” Broadband Genie added.

“Don’t let your beloved fluffy friend sit on your router, its fur will pack heaps of dust and dirt into your router air ducts, which blocks ventilation.”

Upgrade to Something More Modern

Advancements in technology design mean modern gadgets run slightly cooler and aren’t as sensitive to the change in temperature. If your router is 15+ years old, it may be worth looking into an upgrade. You can purchase a router yourself, a budget of £30 – £50 will be plenty.

Digital Detox

If it’s getting too hot and into extreme temperatures, such as 40°C+ and your devices are struggling. Consider taking a digital detox for the afternoon: switch off your devices—and your router, but only if absolutely necessary—and take a break.
