Liverpool met Florian Wirtz for talks earlier this week but the Bayer Leverkusen star won’t be the only new face at Anfield if he joins in the summer transfer window
Incoming Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili appears to be excited about the prospect of linking up with Florian Wirtz next season. Mamardashvili, 24, agreed to sign for the Reds last summer in a transfer deal worth £25million but remained on loan at Valencia for the 2024-25 campaign.
The Georgia international is now preparing for his move to Merseyside and he could be followed by Wirtz. The German playmaker is wanted by several European heavyweights including Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
Liverpool threw their hat in the ring with this week by holding talks with Wirtz and his parents in Blackpool. The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder then travelled to Manchester to speak to City.
Bayern have long been considered the frontrunners but they’re unwilling to pay Leverkusen’s reported £126million asking price. That’s opened the door for Liverpool and talk of him joining the newly-crowned Premier League champions is gathering pace.
After it emerged that Liverpool executives had contacted Wirtz’s camp, it was relayed by football news page 433 on Instagram. Mamardashvili was among the 1.2m users who liked their post.

It suggests that the soon-to-be former Valencia star would be delighted if Arne Slot’s side won the race for Wirtz. The 22-year-old is yet to decide his future, though, with Leverkusen in the process of a appointing a new manager after Xabi Alonso agreed to join Real Madrid this summer.
Wirtz has enjoyed another prolific season, scoring 16 goals and providing 14 assists in 44 appearances. During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated Germany, he revealed that he’d be open to playing abroad.
“I’m quite lucky to have so many excellent clubs right on my doorstep and to now be able to play for one of the best clubs in Germany and Europe,” Wirtz said. “I have big respect for the guys here in Leverkusen, who come from South America or Africa, for example, and leave their families and environment behind for their careers.

“It’s definitely tempting for me to leave my comfort zone at some point and experience something new. I know the football dressing rooms well enough and am convinced that I would quickly find my place anywhere.”
Wirtz could play his final game for Leverkusen on Saturday, as they take on sixth-placed Mainz. Alonso’s men, who won the Bundesliga last season, have already confirmed second spot.
