The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon that have a firm place on almost everyone’s bucket list — and what better place to experience them than this European capital

Reykjavik, Iceland, has been hailed as one of the best places in the world to witness the Northern Lights. This natural spectacle is a must-see for many, and there’s no better place to tick it off your bucket list than this European city.

The European city offers numerous ‘light-hunting’ expeditions during the peak season, but spotting this natural wonder isn’t as straightforward as you might think. October is an ideal time to visit, with longer, darker nights that aren’t too chilly, allowing you to enjoy the expeditions without freezing.

October also offers a higher chance of seeing the stunning lights, thanks to clearer skies. Plus, it’s not the peak tourist season, so it won’t be overly crowded, reports the Express.

The experience of witnessing the Northern Lights in Iceland has received high praise from travellers across the globe.

One holidaymaker who took part in the Reykjavik Excursions Northern Lights Tour shared on Tripadvisor: “After spending time at one location observing various different light shows, we were taken to another.

“We thought we had seen the best of the Northern Lights and were all strapped in ready to head back, when the bus lights went off, Kalli switched off the engine and told us to get off the bus quick.

“The Northern Lights show we then experienced was out of this world, Kalli crying out, ‘It’s a corona!’, the best of the spectacles. Thanks to him and his persistence, we experienced something truly magical.”

Describing the Northern Lights display that can be witnessed in Iceland, TimeOut’s Jamie Inglis said: “I caught a hint of the Northern Lights on the edge of Reykjavik, and then saw them again further out in Iceland. In their full glory, the lights danced across the sky in greens, blues, purples and everything in-between, at mind-boggling scale.”

Whilst visiting Reykjavik, take advantage of everything this remarkable city provides. At the Sky Lagoon, you’ll discover one of the nation’s legendary geothermal pools.

The water is warmed naturally below the earth’s surface, essentially creating a hot spring for your enjoyment.

These steaming baths draw their power from Iceland’s volcanic heart, so you certainly won’t feel chilly. The city boasts a rich cultural and historical heritage, with the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church tower dominating the Reykjavik skyline.

The towering 73-metre structure offers breathtaking panoramic views, providing the perfect backdrop for a memorable photo.
