Easter holidays are around the corner, and many holidaymakers are scavenging at the places to visit for a short break away from the city. Not too far from home, there’s a place that has been rated one of the best despite its small size – it’s in the UK.

Located on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills, Wells is known to be the smallest city in England. Nonetheless, it’s known for its historic charm with a lot of rich heritage. It has a population of 10,000 people, though it gets crowded during the hotter months.

According to Which?, Wells has a destination score of 83% and a four-star rating on food and drinks. They also named it the UK’s smallest city, after the City of London. It’s also one of the best small towns and villages in the country.

Visitors can get to Wells by taking a train from London Paddington to Castle Cary, with the journey taking approximately 25 minutes. Then, visitors can choose to take Line 1 or Line 174 bus, which will take them to Wells in under two hours, or take a 30-minute taxi ride.

Things to do in Wells

The town offers a wide range of activities and attractions suitable for all ages. Locals and visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing at the beach, and exploring the town’s extensive history. Some other popular attractions include:

  • Wells Cathedral: Gothic architecture, known for the ‘scissors vault.’
  • The Bishop’s Palace: A medieval palace with beautiful gardens, known to be home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for more than 800 years.
  • Viscars’ Close: A medieval street that’s believed to be the only complete one left in England. The houses are occupied by members of the cathedral choir.
  • Wells Market Place: A market filled with local shops, cafés and restaurants.
  • Wells & Mendip Museum: Learn more about the history of Wells and the surrounding areas.

The gastronomy in Wells is also very wide, and there are a lot of different options available, depending on your cravings and taste buds.

Whether you’re looking for a simple lunch, a special dinner, or a family-owned hospitality business, visitors can find foods from Italy, India, China, Thailand, and of course, the good old fish and chips.

If you’re looking for a place to spend the Easter holidays or simply a weekend away, Wells is the perfect place to disconnect from the busy city life. Plus, who said there’s a need to travel abroad?
