Britain’s cheapest supermarket, Aldi, is using 2025 to open an array of new supermarkets across the country – nine of which will be in London alone
Aldi has unveiled major expansion plans for Britain in the next two years, with its sights set on every UK region.
The £650m investment will include the development of new shops in Fulham Broadway, London, Billericay in Essex and Cheadle in Stoke-on-Trent. But in all, there will be around 30 new store openings across the country in 2025.
Aldi is now the fourth-largest supermarket in the country, and it was also crowned the cheapest in 2024 by Which? for the fourth time. Its year-on-year growth has mimicked its popularity, and it now has more than 920 stores in Britain – and it’s not stopping there. Bosses say they are still searching for freehold town-centre or edge-of-centre sites suitable for property development. It wants sites that are big enough to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store and around 100 dedicated parking spaces, preferably on a prominent main road and with good visibility and access.
Just last year, Aldi opened in new locations such as Totton in Hampshire, Cribbs Causeway in Bristol and Pwllheli in Gwynedd.
Giles Hurley, chief executive officer for Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “At Aldi, our unwavering commitment has always been to provide Britain with the best value groceries. The demand for our unbeatable prices is now at an all-time high, which gives us the confidence to continue investing in Britain to provide greater access to our award-winning products at the lowest prices. We recognise that there are still areas without an Aldi store, so our expansion plans for 2025 are designed to address some of these gaps as we work towards our long-term goal of 1,500 UK stores.”

Nine stores opening in London
This year is set to be a big one for Aldi within the parameters of the M25 as it plunges £55m investment into opening nine stores in the capital.
Along with Fulham Broadway, new stores are set to open in Wimbledon, Caterham and Orpington. The investment also includes upgrades at some of its existing locations within the M25, including an extension to its Colindale store.
