Disgraced music mogul and rapper P Diddy is spending Memorial Day behind bars as he currently stands trial in New York, but his day will be very different to previous years
P Diddy is spending Memorial Day behind bars. The music mogul is currently being held in custody while his trial has faced a minor delay due to the holiday.
The 55-year-old is facing a number of serious charges, including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion and transportation to engage in prostitution. He was arrested in September and strongly denies all allegations made against him. He has been in prison since his arrest, and a number of bail requests have been rejected.
Today, the court has been closed for the day in order to celebrate the holiday, while Diddy, whose real name is Sean Combs, will spend it behind bars. He’s currently being held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC), where he’s been since his initial arrest.
It’s reported that he’s currently being held in a fourth-floor dormitory, which he shares with 20 other men. But despite being banged up, those inside the prison will be able to enjoy the holidays, to a certain extent.
A source has said that the prisoners will be able to play card games, dominoes, three-on-three basketball matches and a football match. People magazine reports that inmates at MDC will eat a regular rotating Monday meal. For breakfast they’ll have fruit, cereal, skimmed milk and a breakfast cake.
At lunch time, they will be offered BBQ chicken, kidney beans, macaroni and cheese, mixed vegetables, wholemeal bread, fruit and a holiday pudding and drink. Later on for dinner, options include chicken, tofu, rice, canned corn, pinto beans, wholemeal bread and a drink.
Although he was once one of the biggest names in entertainment, Diddy won’t be treated any differently in prison. “He is being treated like any other detainee awaiting trial,” a source said in September 2024 following his arrest. They added: “As with all public figures in his position, he was placed on suicide watch upon admittance to the facility as a precaution.”
His trial started on May 12, and he has pleaded not guilty to all criminal allegations. So far, the jury has heard testimonies from his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, who claims to have been abused by Diddy, as well as Kid Cudi, who went on to date Cassie.
Elsewhere, two former employees, former assistant George Kaplan and David James, have also taken to the stand to testify. Homeland Security Investigations special agent Gerard Gannon, Cassie’s former friend Kerry Morgan, and former makeup artist for Diddy and Cassie, Mylah Morales, were among others who testified so far.
The trial is expected to last for several weeks. Judge Arun Subramanian recently stated that he would conclude by July 4. He told the jury to follow strict requirements over the weekend and even offered them tips on how to do this. “Do not talk to anyone about the case,” he said before dismissing the jury – telling them to “watch the Knicks avenge their Game One loss.”
After his arrest, his lawyer Marc Agnifilo blasted the federal case as a “witch hunt”, calling the decision to prosecute “deeply disappointing”. “Mr Combs is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal,” he said outside the courthouse. “We look forward to clearing his name.”
If convicted, Combs faces decades behind bars – potentially a life sentence – given the federal sentencing guidelines around human trafficking and racketeering.
