Inside ‘super creepy’ abandoned British barracks with ‘pitch black creaking corridors’

A 23-year-old urban explorer has discovered a derelict former Ministry of Defence barracks, complete with old signs, old keys, and big red buttons – and she has shared photos of the ‘atmospheric’ buildings

A British explorer has discovered an abandoned MOD barracks – which she described as “super creepy”, with “pitch black” rooms and “creaking corridors”.

Chloe Urbex, 23, has made her mark online for her adventures exploring spooky sites, such as abandoned hospitals, horror museums, and derelict race tracks. But her latest discovery in London, was something different – a barracks that has been left to rot.

“It has been abandoned for 50 years due to the building not being modern enough,” Chloe said. “They then built another a couple of miles down the road and left this to crumble.”

She continued: “It was super creepy. It was pitch black. The corridors were creaking throughout the time there. It was a very atmospheric explore.”

Barracks are purpose-built living quarters for soldiers, often made using prefabricated construction methods. They are designed to be quick to assemble, cost-effective, and provide temporary or semi-permanent accommodation for deployments, training sites, or bases.

But this one has been left to fall into disrepair.

Chloe shared her find on Instagram, taking photos as she made her way around the rotting, dirt-strewn building.

Her pictures reveal peeling ceilings and walls, broken windows, decaying stairs, and unused storage. She also spotted keys, electricity boxes, big red buttons, toilets, and old signs – including one that read: “Quiet please, night duty staff sleeping.”

The post, captioned Abandoned MOD Barracks in the South East of England, has attracted hundreds of likes. One follower wrote: “To see empty dilapidated MOD buildings is totally unacceptable. These buildings should be repurposed.”

It comes after another urban explorer made a spooky discovery when they stumbled across a Kent pub that had been abandoned for nearly two decades.

Sean Piper ventured into The Harrow, a once bustling local that closed its doors in 2006 and subsequently went into administration.

He revealed: “I’ve visited the site a few times as it’s local to me. The decay gets worse every time. It’s a special feeling finding something just by driving past like you’ve discovered the hidden past.

“The first thing that hit me as I walked through the conservatory door was the smell. The damp and mould was severe.”

One unusual observation about The Harrow, Sean noted, was that it seemed as though patrons were anticipating a return when it shut down, with menus still displayed – and even an unfinished pint left on the counter.

Moreover, the bar remained relatively well-stocked with bottles of alcohol scattered around, none of which have fared well under the relentless onslaught of nature over nearly 20 years.

Sean added: “It was like the business shut overnight and people were expecting to return.”
