Rapid Vienna have confirmed that Austria international Guido Burgstaller has been hospitalised after an attack in the Austrian capital and has been ruled out for the next few months
Austria international and former Bundesliga star Guido Burgstaller has been rushed to hospital after being attacked in Vienna.
Burgstaller, 35, was violently assaulted by an ‘unknown’ man and has since been hospitalised after suffering a serious head injury. A statement from Rapid Vienna on Monday morning read: “There is some very bad news to report before SK Rapid’s last home game of the season. Guido Burgstaller was the victim of a physical attack in the presence of witnesses at the weekend and suffered serious head injuries.
“The 35-year-old from Carinthia was attacked by an unknown man in the center of Vienna and suffered a fractured skull after a fall caused by a brutal blow. Burgstaller was immediately examined and treated in a Viennese hospital. Unfortunately, he will have to spend the next few days there and it is also a fact that he will not be able to work for several months .
“SK Rapid wishes its worthy player a speedy and uncomplicated recovery and trusts in the responsible authorities that the as yet unknown perpetrator will be brought to justice quickly. We ask that you respect the privacy of Guido Burgstaller and his family.
“If there is any news in the next few days, SK Rapid will report it in consultation with its medical department and Guido Burgstaller. SK Rapid will of course fully support Guido Burgstaller on his way to a full and hopefully speedy recovery.”
Burgstaller has enjoyed a long career both in Germany and in Austria. He kicked off his professional career with FC Kärnten before a move to Wiener Neustadt.
The striker joined Rapid Vienna in 2011 and spent three years with the Austrian giants before a move to Championship side in Cardiff City. Burgstaller went on to play for Nurnberg, Schalke and St. Pauli.

He returned to Rapid in 2022 and has gone on to score 42 goals in 94 appearances since then. The forward also has 26 Austria caps to his name having made his debut in 2012, while he has scored twice for his country.
He initially retired in 2019 but returned to the national team fold just over four years later under ex-Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick.
Rapid Vienna’s most recent outing saw them slump to a 3-1 defeat to Omonoia in the Europa League. They are next back in action on Thursday as they host Danish side Copenhagen.
