One of the most beautiful regions in Italy, it has been named as one of the top destinations for Valentine’s Day this year
As Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to whisk your loved one away for a romantic getaway. If you’re not keen on battling the crowds in Paris or Venice, then this lesser-known Italian retreat could be ideal.
The Lonely Planet has unveiled its top 10 alternative Valentine’s Day destinations for 2025, and the Italian region of Umbria has made the cut as a greener and more affordable option than Tuscany. Known as the ‘green heart of Italy,’ this region offers a stunning blend of rolling vineyard-covered hills, olive groves, and lively university towns with bustling old centres and vibrant markets renowned for local black truffles.
It boasts equally charming hilltop towns and delectable cuisine, with each town having its own unique pasta and dessert recipes, and the region is famous for producing legumes and wild mushrooms. Umbria is also home to a town dubbed ‘mini Rome’ due to its impressive Roman ruins and architecture.
Recognised as one of Italy’s largest and best-preserved medieval towns, Gubbio transports visitors back in time with its rich history dating back to 1000 AD. Despite being the oldest town in Umbria, it’s remarkably well-preserved and houses what was once the second-largest theatre in the Roman Empire.
Constructed around 20BC during Emperor Augustus’ reign, the ruins of this incredible theatre can be seen on the outskirts of the town, reports the Express.
Thrill-seekers, take note: even in this medieval town, you can get your adrenaline fix. The town’s “birdcage” cable car, dubbed the Funivia, is an absolute must-try.
Daredevils can hop on this vertical adventure from the Basilica di Sant’Ubaldo, perched atop Monte Ingino—a place eternally captured by Dante in his 11th-century writings. The two-seater cable cars never stop moving, so be swift and cautious as you jump aboard for a breathtaking descent into the town’s core.
