Coronation Street actor Calum Lill has opened up on the ‘rubbish’ job he had before landing Joel Bailey role after a two-year dry spell of no acting work
Coronation Street’s Calum Lill had an unexpected job before taking on the role of Joel Deering.
The actor has starred in Waterloo Road, Hollyoaks and Holby City. He is currently wrapped up in an intense story line on the ITV soap, making it his biggest yet. Joel is set to come under fire as his girlfriend Dee-Dee Bailey, played by Channique Sterling-Brown, discovers he is hiding a big secret from her.
“Joel has a wife, Emily, and a young daughter,” Calum said. “He’s going through a divorce but, legally, she’s not his ex-wife yet. Emily turns up out of the blue wanting to finalise the divorce and Dee-Dee sees it all on the CCTV it all unravels then.” Calum continued: “I think Joel had been waiting for the right time to tell her and it’s not come.
“So the longer he’s waited, the more it seems like he’s deliberately deceived Dee-Dee. Joel’s dug a huge hole and it doesn’t look good. Joel needs to do his grovelling, he absolutely needs to do his grovelling and he needs to make it up to her.” Before joining Corrie, Calum had other soap roles, but he also worked non-acting jobs.
“I worked festivals for a year in 2022,” Calum shared. “I did this paella stand and it was amazing, I’d gone from being locked inside to being at a festival five days a week. But I was a bit down because if you’re working class and northern, all you want to do is something on Coronation Street. I thought: ‘It’s just not going to happen’. Then I was selling cars, I was rubbish at it and I didn’t enjoy it.”
Joel’s actor, Calum, revealed that his real-life girlfriend was overjoyed when he landed the role on Coronation Street after a two-year dry spell. “My girlfriend Roberta is incredible,” said Calum. “When I told her I got the role, she was screaming and crying. I was crying too. She knew I’d been putting on a brave face and it was a huge relief that 15 years of hard work paid off.”
Calum admitted: “I’d not worked in acting for two years when Corrie said they wanted to see me. The next day I screen tested and they said I’d know by half ten the following day. Half ten came and went when my agent called. I thought they were calling to tell me I’d not got it. I walked out onto the forecourt, I was between two cars.
“My agent said: ‘Calum?’ There was a silence that lasted for about ten minutes and then I heard ‘You got it’.” Overwhelmed with emotion, Calum recalled: “Like the absolute drama queen that I am, I just fell to my knees and was crying and sobbing, I couldn’t speak. I was over the moon.”
