I’ve flown business on 9 airlines — one was so good I’m excited to fly 11 hours again

There is a business class cabin that’s a cut above the rest, with a range of unexpected services that make all the difference when travelling long haul

Flying business class is a luxury that’s easy to get accustomed to. With perks like priority boarding, three-course meals served on real crockery, and of course, the lie-flat seats, it’s undeniably indulgent.

However, some airlines go above and beyond, offering additional, often unexpected services that make all the difference when travelling long haul.

Thanks to a combination of work obligations and family trips, I’ve had the opportunity to experience several business class cabins. But one airline stood out so much that I found myself eagerly anticipating my next flight with them.

The journey in question? A British Airways flight from London Heathrow to Barbados.

From the moment you step into the airport lounge, the benefits are exceptional, with an extensive range of food and drinks available on demand, as well as comfy seating to while away the time in style (or simply have a nap).

Once you’re onboard, you can expect top-notch customer service from the cabin crew (in true British style), elaborate menus with a wide variety of food and drink options, and roomy seats that provide ample privacy.

My journey began as you might expect — with a glass of bubbly in hand. The flight attendant who served me was quick to clarify, ‘It’s not Prosecco, darling, it’s Champagne.’ That suits me just fine — either will do. Cheers.

I then discovered the amenity kit, a charming little bag from The White Company filled with treats from the brand — perfect for extending the pre-bedtime pampering routine to make the journey seem shorter.

The lunch was superb, featuring a menu of international dishes as well as British favourites, including a well-chosen cheeseboard. It even boasted an elegant cocktail and wine list to match according to preference, something I’ve not encountered on many flights.

But the icing on the cake was the afternoon tea experience. It appears that the 40,000ft altitude and cabin pressure don’t hinder the taste buds’ ability to savour a good scone and a few finger sandwiches.

And the tea selection? Brilliant in a way only the Brits could have achieved.

The next part of the journey was spent fiddling with the buttons until I found a reclining position I liked (aided by some truly plush pillows and bedding). I was then ready to browse through a seemingly endless list of TV shows and films until, about 20 minutes later, I dozed off for the remainder of the flight.

And that’s how you nail business blass.
