‘I’ve spent over £100,000 on my looks – but I only want to date ugly men’

As the latest dating term ‘Shrekking’ is going viral online, one woman has admitted to only dating ugly men so they feel ‘grateful’ standing next to her when they go out together

A woman has claimed she only dates ugly men to ensure that she’s the attractive one in her relationships. Model Lana Madison’s controversial dating ‘hack’ is what’s been referred to as a recent trend called “shrekking” where people date ‘lower’ so they are less likely to get their heart broken.

Lana said she doesn’t want a “prince charming” and would much prefer a “sexy ogre” instead. She revealed she has spent $150K (£111K) on her looks, so wants to make sure she’s the better looking one in the relationship so they can “look grateful” when standing next to her.

The model, who lives between New York and Miami has previously been mistaken for Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively, but while Blake is happily married to Hollywood heart throb Ryan Reynolds, Lana isn’t looking for a handsome partner.

“I only date ugly men – that way I’ll always be the hot one,” said Lana. “He could look like Shrek for all I care.” She then confessed: “I don’t want Prince Charming, I want a sidekick – someone whose main job is to hype me up and look grateful standing next to me.

“Why would I spend six figures on my face and body just to date a man who thinks he’s prettier than me? I’ve dated some real ugly ogres in my time.”

Lana then said in her past relationships she was the “star” and claimed when they would walk into a room all eyes were on her and not her partner which she “loved”.

She insists that her high-maintenance look is an “investment” and although she refuses to “compete” with a partner for attention, she admits that ‘Shrekking’ has its flaws. Lana said: “Sometimes even the ugly guys cheat.

“That’s when you realise it doesn’t matter if they’re a 10 or a two – men are men. But at least I still look amazing in the break-up photos,” the adult model continued. She said she understands if people think her dating method is wrong, but also thinks many women secretly want their date to be ‘punching’.

She added: “Other women might not admit it but lots of us want to be the better-looking one in the relationship. I’ve just made it my rule. My man doesn’t need abs or a pretty face. I’ve got enough beauty for the both of us.”

Lana isn’t the only person using the ‘Shrekking’ method, as it’s been widely popularised online. If you drop your standards and date someone who is ‘punching’, you have the advantage, according to social media users. If you’re the ‘hotter’ one, you’re less likely to have your heart broken, as your partner will be so grateful to have you, apparently.

However many people have taken issue with the trend, slamming it for it’s toxic nature. Relationship coach Amy Chan gave her verdict on the phrase and told USA Today: “In this plot line, you’re dating an ogre without the princess treatment. The term might be new, but the behaviour isn’t. Plenty of people have put looks lower on the list or hoped attraction would grow over time, and that in itself isn’t a bad thing.”

She further noted that it backfires for daters when someone assumes that just because they’re dating ‘down’ in looks, they’ll automatically be treated better. “For those who’ve been ‘shrekked,’ the goal isn’t to retreat back to only dating conventionally attractive people. It’s to develop better assessment skills for character, values and emotional availability regardless of what package they come in.

“Physical attraction matters in romantic relationships, but it shouldn’t be the inverse predictor of good treatment that some people assume it to be,” she said, and urged people to let it put you off people who you wouldn’t usually go for due to their looks.
