Jack Grealish and four other players who deserve chance in Thomas Tuchel’s new England squad

By staff29 August 2025No Comments5 Mins Read

Thomas Tuchel has some big decisions to make for his England squad to face Andorra and Serbia as the Three Lions continue their World Cup qualification campaign in September

Thomas Tuchel names his squad on Friday for England’s next World Cup qualifiers. The German coach will be afforded a new opportunity to cast an eye over his stars chomping at the bit to make the trip to the United States next year.

England welcome Andorra to Villa Park before the Three Lions make the trip to Belgrade and the Stadion Rajko Mitic to take on Serbia. Tuchel’s side sit top of Group K with a perfect record after three matches and will hope to maintain that position.

The former Chelsea boss will likely be without key figures in Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer for the upcoming fixtures meaning there will be a chance to impress — even if it is just on the training pitch. Who could or should make the cut this time?

The likes of Marc Guehi and John Stones are likely to return after injury issues earlier in the summer but it is perhaps elsewhere in the squad that the battle for positions could heat up.

Mirror Football looks at some of the players who may have done enough too earn a call-up .

Elliot Anderson

Last summer, the £35million fee spent on Elliot Anderson was at the very least a surprise. It was easy to see as an accountancy trick for PSR as Odysseas Vlachodimos went in the opposite direction to Newcastle for an inflated price.

But it’s scarcely possible to argue the midfielder has not been worth every penny for Nottingham Forest since. The Geordie Maradona has starred at the City Ground and was a standout player for the under-21s in their summer success, Anderson has earned a call-up.

It is an unenviable task to break into England’s midfield currently but few have played as consistently and Anderson offers an all-round package that could be particularly appealing.

Jack Grealish

It may be too soon for Jack Grealish’s return to the England fold but the star has sent a swift reminder of his talents since joining Everton. With Palmer and Saka potentially out, Grealish stands out as a difference-maker and creator that may be required in the coming months.

The 29-year-old has made the move from City with the aim of earning a place in next summer’s World Cup squad and playing football, and Grealish’s efforts against Brighton may have put him on that track. The former Aston Villa man first one his place in the England squad as a different option to what was available and a bit of a maverick, maybe he can offer that again.

Tino Livramento

The young full-back departed Chelsea at 18, when Tuchel was in charge, to find first team football. And injuries aside, he quickly proved he was worthy of time on the pitch.

Livramento’s versatility across both flanks could prove a useful tool in a tournament situation and he is equally adept at performing as a full-back or a wing-back to offer some flexibility. All in all, he’s playing very well at the moment and could be a player that locks down the position in England colours for a number of a years, if provided an opportunity.

Callum Hudson-Odoi

Tuchel had a penchant for starting Callum Hudson-Odoi as wing-back at Stamford Bridge but the Forest star remains at an attacking threat in more advanced positions. Still just 24, the former Chelsea academy star still has plenty to offer and should be at least in the conversation following his start to the season, and it feels like he could easily compete with the likes of Noni Madueke for a spot.

Adam Wharton

A player who has handled every step up in his career with ease. Wharton has already looked good in an England shirt and has earned every plaudit he has received.

The Crystal Palace ace offers another profile for Tuchel to utilise and his abilities on the ball, in accomodating transitions and building play are what England have often lacked in the centre of the park. Still just 21, but feels like he has a big future ahead for the Three Lions.
