Greggs is probably one of the last places you’d expect to see James Charles – and his reaction to trying his first ever sausage roll has left British fans reeling
Makeup influencer and social media personality James Charles has left some British fans reeling after posting his reaction to trying Greggs for the very first time. He recently touched down in the London to collab with other UK creators, but fans weren’t expecting this pistop.
The 25-year-old YouTuber is most famous for his elaborate makeup looks. He’s also become known for his humorous and sometimes bizarre TikToks, like when he posted an extended ‘crash out’ at the news of a potential TikTok ban.
But it was his TikTok reaction to trying his first-ever Greggs that’s sent him viral yet again. With over five million views, fans were on the edge of their seats to see his verdict over one of Britain’s most beloved institutions.
“Oh, that looks nice,” James said, pulling the sausage roll out of its classic Greggs bag. After taking a big bite, he declared, “It’s so good.” However, fans took offence to the following comment, in which the makeup mogul said that he thought the roll needed “a bit of sauce”.

“A sausage roll with ketchup is DIABOLICAL,” one commenter said. “THE GASP I GASPED WHEN YOU PUT THE SAUSAGE ROLL IN KETCHUP!” another exclaimed. “It feels like a crime,” another added.
Others pointed out that eating a sausage roll with ketchup was very non-British. “I’ve never seen a Brit eat it with ketchup,” one wrote. Another compared it to dipping crisps in ketchup, claiming given its status as a snack it should be eaten on its own.
The fact that he also ate the entire roll without keeping it in the bag also provoked discussion. “You know they’re not from the uk when they take the entire product out of the bag. The bag helps catch the inevitable crumbs,” a user pointed out.
James also proceeded to try the Greggs chicken bake, which he described as “gorgeous”. He then tried the pepperoni pizza slice, which he was also a massive fan of. “Okay Gregg,” he said, looking wowed.
He proceeded to rate Greggs a relatively positive seven out of ten. Though he added: “If I was drunk on a night out this would be a ten.” He then ended the video on a wholesome note, posing with the (slightly bewildered-looking) Greggs staff.
Aside from the ketchup controversy, British viewers were largely pleased with his reaction. Although some Greggs connoisseurs were upset that James didn’t try the steak bake – one of the deli’s most popular dishes. James responded that he “wasn’t feeling it” because he’d had steak for dinner the night before.
Many comments simply shocked that he was even in a Greggs. “Imagine working in greggs and james charles comes in and orders a sausage roll,” one said.
“James Charles eating a Greggs wasn’t on my bingo card like,” a commenter said. Geordie Shore star Chloe Ferry even chimed in: “Imagine walking into Greggs and seeing James Charles munching on his steak bake!!!”
One user implored him to try Marks and Spencers Percy Pigs – another British culinary institution. James responded, saying, “Okay I will see if I can find them!!”
