The Saturday morning TV chef James Martin reckons the dish will be just what’s needed for anyone needing ‘extra comfort’ in winter months
A TV chef has delighted fans by sharing his ‘best comfort food’. As temperatures begin to take a serious dip in large parts of the country, James Martin has given his favourite recipe for lasagne which he describes as a ‘family fave’. The Saturday morning TV chef says the dish will be just what’s needed for anyone needing ‘extra comfort’ in winter months James said: “Homemade lasagne is right up there with the best comfort food. He goes on to list the ingredients you’ll need for the minced beef dish. These include a dash of wine for flavour, plus onions, garlic, tomatoes and even some fresh herbs.
Ingredients
500g beef mince
1 onion peeled and diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
400g can chopped tomatoes
2tbs tomato puree
Few sprigs thyme
200ml beef stock
100ml Red white wine
James gives some more detail about one of the main parts of a lasagne, the cheese sauce. James’ version includes some extra additions such as double cream and mozzarella cheese, to make it just a little bit special and more comforting for everyone.
Cheese Sauce
50g butter
50g plain flour
300ml milk
300ml double cream
12 lasagne sheets
200g grated cheddar cheese
2 balls mozzarella
Method
Among the first tasks to do is to pre-heat the oven to 200C,
This is before the filling is made by frying the beef, onion, garlic and thyme until browned. It is then topped up with stock, wine and tomatoes and left to bubble for 30 minutes.
The creation of the white sauce involves melting the butter in a pan, before flour is whisked in and the mixture is allowed and cook out for two minutes. The milk and cream is then added and half of the grated cheese before it is whisked again simmered until bubbling.
One the meat is cooked 1/3 is put into the bottom of a large oven proof dish. It is topped with lasagne before the step is repeated twice more. Cooks are then instructed to pour sauce all over the top. And a final stage involves adding the remainder of the cheese and mozzarella before it is baked for 20 minutes.
