Arne Slot has been a huge hit at Liverpool but the Dutchman looks to have made it clear where players sit in the pecking order with some failing to start any Premier League games
Jamie Carragher feels that there are at least three players that Arne Slot doesn’t seem to trust at Liverpool – with Harvey Elliott among them.
The Reds boss has made an instant impact in his first year at Anfield and he has the team well placed to land the Premier League title. That would make him only the second man to do so after Jurgen Klopp and he’s largely worked with what the German left him.
Liverpool have been quiet in the transfer windows, but that hasn’t hampered them this term and they remain in the hunt for three trophies. Slot has worked with a small pool of players, with some getting more minutes than others as the new manager makes his own mind up about certain individuals.
Elliott was signed by Klopp and enjoyed some big moments, but he’s only been used sporadically. He’s failed to start a single Premier League game for Slot with his nine appearances coming from the bench – whilst Wataru Endo has also seen his minutes limited.
Carragher wrote in the Telegraph: “The Liverpool manager has tended to favour the same starters from a preferred pool of 14 or 15. He does not seem to trust back-up options such as Harvey Elliott or Wataru Endo unless there is no option.”
Endo, signed by Klopp last summer, has struggled with Ryan Gravenberch becoming a standout performer. The Japan international is also yet to start a game with his 11 outings coming as a substitute.
Carragher has equally questioned Slot’s belief in Federico Chiesa, who was his only summer recruit. The Italian’s stock was incredibly high a few years after winning Euro 2020 with his country but he’s rarely been used with Slot preferring a host of other frontmen ahead of him.
“Last summer’s sole summer signing, Federico Chiesa, has contributed nothing. Again, his lack of minutes suggests Slot does not believe the Italian is a game-changer,” said the Sky Sports pundit.
Cheisa has only played 171 minutes for the Reds and Slot has previously claimed his pre-season has been a factor in his lack of exposure. He said: “Every player is unique, so each one has his own background. Jota had a normal pre-season, well not normal as he was at the Euros, but he had a normal start with us and Federico did not.”
