Japanese maples have shallow roots that are very vulnerable to freezing temperatures, but one gardening expert has shared a simple hack to protect them in autumn
Autumn is the perfect season to own a Japanese maple as their foliage will begin to transform into stunning red hues, but gardeners must shield them correctly if they wish to witness their spectacular display.
Japanese maples possess shallow root systems that are extremely susceptible to frost, and without proper care they can suffer harm once conditions become colder and more blustery. Harmed roots will prevent the tree from developing correctly which can result in foliage dropping off, branches becoming restricted and may even cause the entire plant to perish.
Nevertheless, one gardening specialist from Build A Japanese Garden explains that safeguarding Japanese maples is quite straightforward, as you merely need to spread bark around the earth.

They said: “Mulch your Acer with shredded bark roughly six centimetres deep. This will help prevent water evaporating from the soil around the roots. During the winter mulch also helps protect the roots from the cold. Leave a slight gap between the mulch and trunk to help air circulation.”
Mulching is the straightforward gardening technique of blanketing the earth surrounding a plant with material, and during autumn applying mulch serves as protection to shield roots from frost harm, reports the Express.
It also assists in retaining more moisture in the earth as the blustery days in autumn often parch it out, and will also suppress any weeds preventing them from spreading near your Japanese maple.
Using mulch is a natural method to shield Japanese maples from the fluctuating temperatures at this time of year, ensuring your tree remains healthy with stunning foliage.

Here’s how to mulch a Japanese maple
Shredded bark is one of the top mulches for Japanese maples as it retains ample moisture and decomposes over time, enriching the soil with nutrients.
Firstly, tidy up the area around the tree, removing any fallen leaves or weeds, then thoroughly water the ground if the soil is dry. Next, distribute the shredded mulch evenly in a thin layer about six centimetres deep around the tree.
Ensure there is a gap around the trunk as water can stagnate in this area, potentially leading to rot or fungal growth. Also, be careful not to pile up the mulch as this can block light and water from reaching the roots.
Mulching may seem simple, but it can help prevent your Japanese maple from suffering cold damage or drying out, allowing you to enjoy its vibrant red leaves throughout autumn.
