Jim Carrey has revealed he’s open to reprising his iconic Grinch role, but there’s a catch. The actor shared why he’d only consider returning under very specific conditions tied to the movie’s production process.
American actor Jim Carrey has expressed that he’s open to reprising his iconic role in a sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but only under one condition: it must be filmed using motion capture technology.
This would allow him to avoid the physically taxing makeup process he endured for the 2000 holiday classic, which he has described as “excruciating.” Motion capture is a filmmaking technique where an actor’s movements and expressions are digitally recorded and translated into a computer-generated character.
This technology, famously used in films like Avatar and The Polar Express, could enable Carrey to embody the Grinch without enduring hours in prosthetics. Speaking to ComicBook.com, Carrey admitted his interest, saying: “Oh, gosh, you know, if we could figure out the Grinch. The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process.”
He added: “The children were in my mind all the time. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”
On the film set, Carrey had to endure the application of prosthetics, green paint, and yak-hair pieces glued to his scalp, a routine that took around 2.5 hours every morning over a span of 92 days. At the end of the day, removing the makeup added another hour to the ordeal.
Carrey reportedly became so frustrated during this process that, on the first day of shooting, he punched a hole in his trailer wall. To help him cope, the production team enlisted a CIA specialist experienced in teaching operatives how to withstand torture. The expert trained Carrey in techniques to distract himself, such as creating mental diversions or physically breaking the monotony.
Director Ron Howard also empathised with Carrey by donning the full Grinch costume himself for a day to understand the physical and emotional toll. This extreme experience underscores why Carrey has said he would only reprise the role using motion capture technology, avoiding the exhausting makeup process altogether.
This Christmas, Jim Carrey is set to return as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, scheduled for release on December 20, 2024. The 62-year-old actor reprises his role following the massive success of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 2022, which earned an impressive $405 million worldwide at the box office.
Despite earlier indications that Carrey might retire from acting after Sonic the Hedgehog 2, he has decided to return for this third installment. It was previously reported that Jim came out of retirement because he needed the money. The movie will continue the saga with Sonic and his friends facing off against a powerful new foe, Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves. This entry promises to be an intense and thrilling adventure for fans of the franchise.
