Jurgen Klopp eyes reunion with Liverpool star he has regrets over – but on one condition

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is now Red Bull’s head of global soccer and he could be set for a reunion with Harvey Elliott, who is being targeted by RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig are set to step up their interest in Liverpool star Harvey Elliott if Chelsea complete the signing of Xavi Simons. Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move for Simons this summer and the 22-year-old is keen to join the Blues.

Simons is a highly-rated young talent who has made 46 goal contributions in 78 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig, having initially joined them on loan in 2023 before making the move permanent in January this year.

According to the Daily Mail, Leipzig value Simons at around £60million and Chelsea have proposed including Christopher Nkunku or Tyrique George in any potential deal. However, both players do have other options.

If a deal for Simons can be struck, Elliott is said to be Leipzig’s top target to replace him with Liverpool valuing the midfielder at around £50m. A move to Leipzig would see him reunite with former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who is now Red Bull’s head of global soccer.

After leaving Liverpool last summer Klopp admitted his one regret in his final season was not picking Elliott more often, saying: “But if I regret one thing a little bit it’s that Harvey didn’t play often enough maybe. Because in a very important, intense period – January, a lot of injuries – he played really good. He was probably our best player, right wing, right midfield, all these kinds of things.”

Elliott is a boyhood Liverpool fan and has been reluctant to leave the club, but the 22-year-old has admitted that he may be forced to for the good of his career after making just six starts across all competitions.

“It’s just a situation that me and the team have to have a conversation about because I’m coming into an age now where I’m 22, I’m going to be 23 next season,” Elliott said when asked about his future while he was away with England at the Under-21 European Championship.

“I don’t really want to be wasting years of my career because it’s a short career. You don’t know what’s going to happen. I need to reflect. I need to see if I’m content in doing what I’m doing and how can I improve as a player because that’s the most important thing.

“I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself. If that’s to go somewhere else, then it’s a decision that I’m going to have to make and I just need to see what happens.

“Nothing makes me want to leave. I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well. But most importantly, it’s just about what’s best for my career.

“After my injury, I think it was always going to be hard, but I’d hoped I would have got some more opportunities – but football is football.”
