Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who has recently taken a role with Red Bull, could be lured back into football management – but only for a very specific team
Jurgen Klopp has no desire to return to football management but could be tempted to take the Germany national team job.
That’s according to the former Liverpool boss’ agent, Marc Kosicke, who recently reiterated his client’s desire to steer clear of the dugout. In January, after announcing he’d be leaving Anfield at the end of the season, Klopp said that Liverpool would be his last managerial job, and while that’s likely to remain the case, Kosicke reckons the Germany role might be too difficult for him to say no to.
“Jurgen has no desire at all to be a coach at the moment,” he told the Abendblatt podcast, as quoted by BILD. “Life is dynamic. And if it were to come to that [the Germany job], that would certainly be another aspect that I wouldn’t turn down.”
In October, Klopp was appointed Head of Global Football at Red Bull, the group that owns, among other clubs, Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig. It was a controversial move given Klopp’s history with Borussia Dortmund, as well as Leipzig’s circumvention of German football’s cherished 50+1 rule, which all but ensures that clubs are majority-owned by their supporters.
However, Kosicke insists Klopp isn’t deterred by the scrutiny and has been very impressed with the setup and ambition at the Red Bull group. “As he always says: If you try to please everyone every day, you will fail every day,” Kosicke added.
“He has to find the right job for himself after 25 years on the sidelines. And this somewhat higher-level work on a global level in a sports environment that offers so many opportunities is simply exciting. And that’s why we decided that the consequences are definitely worth bearing.
“Jurgen has always spoken positively about Red Bull football. He simply appreciates the work that is done there, because he also transferred some players from Salzburg and Leipzig to Liverpool, who always fit perfectly into his game system.”
Klopp signed several Red Bull-produced stars during his nine-year stint in charge of Liverpool, including Sadio Mane – who joined from Southampton following a stint at Red Bull Salzburg – Naby Keita, Ibrahima Konate, Dominik Szoboszlai and Takumi Minamino.
As for the Germany job, former Leipzig and Bayern Munich manager Julien Nagelsmann is currently at the helm. After a promising showing at Euro 2024, in which Germany were narrowly beaten by eventual winners Spain in the quarter-finals, Nagelsmann’s job is secure.
But at 37 years old, many are tipping him to return to club management in the not-too-distant future. And if he does, Klopp just might see his potential path back to management open up.
