Former world No. 1 Justin Thomas has gone over two years without a PGA Tour victory, but is determined to get back to winning ways in 2025 as he eyes a spot at the Ryder Cup
Justin Thomas is confident he can mirror the spectacular achievements of Scottie Scheffler, as he sets his sights on a triumphant season ahead.
Despite not clinching a major since his 2022 PGA Championship victory—where he triumphed over Will Zalatoris in a dramatic playoff—the ex-world No.1 is raring to add to his tally. Having had a run of mixed results and a two-year drought on the PGA Tour, Thomas is intent on securing another trophy.
Out of the 20 tournaments in 2024, his highlights included third place at The American Express and a near miss at the Zozo Championship, finishing second. In contrast, Scheffler bagged an impressive seven wins, including the Players Championship, along with the Masters and an Olympic gold.
As the 2025 season kicks off with The Sentry, Thomas shared his optimism, saying: “I still fully believe that I can have a year like Scottie just had. I think I would be doing myself a disservice if I didn’t think I could at least do that. I have a lot of faith and capability in my game, and I feel like I’m working on the right things.”
The US star opened up about his recent lack of tournament victories, admitting that snapping his winless streak would be immensely gratifying. Reflecting on his earlier career triumphs, he shared: “I underappreciated (winning) then, for sure.
“It is, it’s just so hard to win out here. … Naturally, the better player that you are, you can get away with more mistakes, but come the end of the week on Sunday, you have to win the golf tournament.
“Winning it in different places can happen differently. You can maybe get it given to you a little bit more than other times,” and emphasized the importance of executing well under pressure: “But you still have to do a lot of things correctly and hit the shots and make putts when you need to win.
“And, yeah, I was fortunate where I was doing it quite often and, I mean, I still feel like I’m fully capable and expect to do that more, but I definitely felt like it was, it should have happened regularly kind of thing.”
Additionally, Thomas has his sights set on the Ryder Cup, expressing enthusiasm for the competitive edge it brings: “I haven’t had the opportunity to play p—– off for a while, so I’m pretty excited to play a little p—– off this year.”
