Keep washing machine free from mould with 5-second trick after every clean

By staff12 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

A washing machine can quickly become a breeding ground for mould if it is not maintained properly, but there is one simple task you can do after every wash to keep it clean

It’s simple to chuck clothes into a washing machine without a second thought, but this home appliance can rapidly become a breeding ground for mould if not properly maintained.

Many people believe washing machines self-clean since they’re exposed to plenty of hot water and soap, but any moisture remaining after doing laundry can cause them to develop mould.

Nevertheless, maintaining your washing machine doesn’t have to be a hassle, as the experts at Embury Environmental has revealed you merely need to spend a few seconds leaving the door ajar.

A simple yet effective way to prevent washing machine mould is to just leave the door open(Image: Getty)

They explained: “It may seem counter-intuitive, but leaving the door open between washes allows moisture to escape and air to circulate. This step alone can drastically reduce mould growth.”

It might appear straightforward, but the rubber lining around washing machine doors frequently accumulates substantial water after a wash, and a damp surface will promote mould development, reports the Express.

Soap from detergent and fabric conditioner can also become lodged within the rubber seal, providing both mould spores and germs with a food source to continue multiplying. Mould can deteriorate the rubber seal, resulting in leaks and also cause laundry to emerge from the wash musty or still grubby due to the bacteria accumulation.

Taking the effort to open the washing machine door after a wash permits greater airflow to reach the rubber and dry it out, so there’s far less likelihood of mould developing. However, if you ever detect any peculiar odours from your washing machine, it’s quite simple to eliminate any mould by wiping the insides of the rubber seal.

The expert advised: “Grab a cloth or sponge, some hot soapy water (or a vinegar solution), and get to work on the rubber seals and door. This is where mould loves to hide.”

White vinegar is one of the most effective natural methods to eradicate mould, as it contains acetic acid, which aids in dissolving mould spores and makes a surface too acidic for spores to regrow. Simply wipe down the seals and then lift the edges to clean out any gunk stuck underneath the rubber, then it should be completely clean.

While maintaining a washing machine might sound like a time-consuming task when you first hear it needs cleaning, it’s actually very easy to keep the appliance mould-free, ensuring it stays functional for much longer.
