Patios can rapidly become grimy during summer since we’re spending more time outside, but they can also become a breeding ground for moss and algae which can prove challenging to remove. Moss and algae are typically more prevalent during the cooler months, but British summers are extremely humid which can cause these plant-like organisms to cling stubbornly to outdoor surfaces, reports the Express.
What makes these spongy green pests so infuriating is that they only require one spore to continue regenerating, so you’ll need to keep scrubbing them away to maintain a clean patio. Nevertheless, the specialists at Infinite Paving have revealed there’s actually a remarkably straightforward method to eliminate both moss and algae to prevent regrowth, as you simply require a bit of baking soda.
They explained: “One very unconventional yet very effective way of getting rid of unwanted paving weeds is by using bicarbonate of soda.
“When eradicating moss from your garden, bicarbonate of soda, or baking soda, is a very powerful substance that will get rid of the moss in no time.”
Baking soda might appear basic, but people frequently undervalue how beneficial it is for cleaning different areas throughout the house, and it can destroy both moss and algae.
Moss and algae can only thrive in an acidic environment, but baking soda is an alkaline product, so will raise the pH level on a surface to prevent them from being able to flourish.
Baking soda is also naturally absorbent and will draw all the moisture from a patio, which also dehydrates them and makes it considerably more difficult for them to survive. This is one of the simplest methods to eradicate moss and algae, whilst also ensuring your patio remains dry and less acidic, preventing any chance of regrowth for the remainder of the summer.
How to remove moss and algae stuck to a patio
All you need to do is wait for a sunny day, then give your patio a thorough sweep to help loosen the stains initially.
Next, liberally sprinkle dry baking soda on any areas of your patio plagued by moss or algae.
Allow the baking soda to sit undisturbed, giving it time to dry out the problem areas and increase the pH level. This process typically takes between 24 to 48 hours.
If you like, you can continue to apply baking soda during this period.
You’ll know the treatment has been successful when the moss or algae starts to turn brown, indicating it’s dying off.
Once completely dried up, the moss or algae should be easy to remove with a simple sweep of a broom. Rinse your patio with hot water, and it should remain clean and free from stains for a significantly longer period.
