The Prime Minister said an attack on his family home in North London is ‘an attack on all of us’ after Kemi Badenoch said she was horrified by the incident
Keir Starmer has said that an attack on his family home is “an attack on all of us”.
He made the remark after Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said she was “horrified” to learn of the suspected arson attack. The remarks were echoed by Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey.
Counter-terrorism police are leading an investigation which has led to a 21-year-old being arrested. The attack on the address in North London came less than 24 hours after an attack on another address linked to the PM. A car is also believed to have been set alight the previous week.
Opening PMQs, Ms Badenoch said: “Before we start, Mr. Speaker, I would like to say to the Prime Minister how horrified I was to hear about the attack on his family home. It is completely unacceptable, and I think I speak for the whole house when I say that this wasn’t just an attack on him, but on all of us and on our democracy.”
The Prime Minister responded: “She’s absolutely right that this is an attack on all of us, democracy and the values that we stand for.” He thanked her for the remark and said the Conservative leader had messaged him after hearing about the attacks.
The suspect was arrested at an address in Sydenham, south-east London, in the early hours of Tuesday on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. Officers are working “at pace” to establish the cause of the fires and “any potential motivation”, Scotland Yard said.
