KEIR STARMER: The Lionesses have lived up to their name – let’s bring it home again

Prime Minister Keir Starmer pays tribute to the grit, skill and calm-headedness of England’s Euros squad – saying they’re an inspiration for the younger generation

The Euros have shown us once again why football means so much to us.

The drama has been off the scale. The Lionesses have truly lived up to their name with those comebacks against Sweden and Italy.

Whatever happens tonight, this team have already written their names in the history books.

They’ve shown the best of our national character. Not just their skill, grit and determination, but their calm-headedness. No matter the pressure they’re under.

Legends like Chloe Kelly and Lucy Bronze have been joined by new heroes like Michelle Agyemang and Hannah Hampton in captivating the nation. And Jess Carter’s courage is an example to us all.

What role models they are for the younger generation – and what inspirations.

I will always remember taking my daughter to see the Lionesses in the semi-final of the last Euros, and I know she’ll always remember it too.

She stayed long after the final whistle, watching the team celebrate. It was a special moment for me – one that is repeated up and down the country every time they play.

Because football not just entertains but inspires.

That’s what this squad does. And it’s why so many young women look up to them.

Last month, I visited the Lionesses training for the Euros at St George’s Park. I went to wish them good luck – but also to talk about what we’re doing to ensure the next generation have every opportunity possible to get involved in sport.

What I saw was a group not just playing for themselves – but for the next generation. Because they want to make difference.

And that’s what we are delivering – as part of our Plan for Change.

We’re breaking down the barriers to taking part in sport. We’re bringing schools, local clubs and National Governing Bodies together to increase access and increase the standard of facilities that kids can enjoy.

We’re making sure that girls will have the same chance as boys to play sport at school, as well as providing equal access for those with special needs and disabilities.

Every child should have the chance to find an activity they love – and then pursue it.

That’s how we’ll break down barriers, help children to build strong characters like their heroes, and raise the next generation of Lionesses.

That’s the power of sport – and that’s why we love the beautiful game.

So, today, it’s time to get your England shirt on. Get on the sofa. Get your family and friends around. Or get down to the pub, which we’ve made sure can open late tonight.

And cheer on our heroes.

Let’s bring it home again. Come on England!
