Kerry Katona has slammed former Made In Chelsea star Spencer Matthews for saying he wouldn’t share his wealth with his three children as it would be a ‘disservice’.
Kerry Katona has dubbed Spencer Matthews ‘hypocritical’ after his recent revelation that he wouldn’t pass down his wealth to his three children, despite the Made In Chelsea star having a prestigious upbringing as the son of multimillionaire Eden Rock hotelier David Matthews.
Last week, Spencer – who shares kids Theodore, Gigi and Otto with wife Vogue Williams – told Mirror : “There’s no point in doing well in life and then giving it all to your kids. It’s doing them a huge disservice.” And admitting she disagrees with the statement, Kerry said in her weekly column: “Spencer Matthews says he won’t be passing on his fortune to his children because he thinks there’s no point doing well in life to give it all to your kids, but I disagree. Everything I do is for my kids and I’d give them everything I’ve got, it’s the whole point of why I work so hard.”
“It’s slightly hypocritical since he had a wealthy upbringing. But I do see his point in making your kids work for their money, and sometimes I worry I’ve given mine too much. My kids have no idea what it’s like to have nothing, but I enjoy giving them what I never had.”
Kerry is a proud mum of five, sharing kids Molly, 23, and Lilly Sue, 22, with first husband Brian McFadden, Heidi, 17, and Max, 16, with second husband Mark Croft and youngest DJ, 10, with late husband George Kay.
Admitting he has heard comedian Jimmy Carr talking about ‘trust fund kids’, Spencer explained that he didn’t want his children to be handed everything, sharing: “Jimmy quite eloquently talks about trust fund kids who are given everything, and he sees them as just being really unfortunate, actually, and I would completely agree.”
“If you’re a young man who’s just given everything, or a young woman, who’s just given everything, you may not ever understand the need to work because you have what you think you want, and then, therefore, you won’t ever feel proud of yourself. You won’t ever have a sense of achievement.”
Spencer is already ensuring his children have challenges and Theodore has recently joined his local Parkrun, perhaps inspired by Spencer’s ultramarathons. Spencer says: “Theodore is starting to run now. He ran two kilometres the other day. I was just so proud of him because the kid got around two laps, and some kids give up after one lap because they’re given that option. The more comfort you wrap around people, the weaker they will become.”
