Kobbie Mainoo’s emotional reaction alongside Ruben Amorim after Man Utd winner vs Liverpool

By staff20 October 2025No Comments5 Mins Read

Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday afternoon with Harry Maguire scoring a late winner to take all three points from the defending Premier League champions

Kobbie Mainoo was overcome with joy when Harry Maguire netted the decisive goal in Manchester United’s win over Liverpool. Anfield was a cauldron of tension on Sunday, as Ruben Amorim’s team took on Arne Slot’s Premier League champions in the north west derby.

Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead just two minutes into the match-up, slipping the ball past Giorgi Mamardashvili from close range before then celebrating wildly in front of the Kop. Despite Cody Gakpo sneaking in to equalise 78 minutes into the game, Liverpool were denied a share of the spoils.

Six minutes later, England defender Maguire headed home at the far post, securing a hard-fought win for United over their fiercest rivals. The away fans naturally exploded with delight – and United’s official social media account caught Amorim’s animated reaction to the goal.

The clip also captured Mainoo’s ecstatic response, as he was lifted into the air by a member of the Reds’ coaching staff, his face beaming with happiness. It occurred just moments before Mainoo was brought on as a replacement for Bruno Fernandes – as Amorim sought to preserve the advantage his team had secured.

And that’s precisely what United managed, withstanding a relentless Liverpool assault that continued throughout the eight minutes of additional time. Following that triumph, United rose to ninth in the Premier League standings, boasting four wins, three defeats and one draw from their first eight matches.

Liverpool, meanwhile, endured their fourth successive loss in the encounter, having entered the clash following defeats to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea. United now benefit from a week’s respite before hosting Brighton at Old Trafford – with clashes against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham away from home scheduled before the November international break.

Reflecting on the victory after the full-time whistle , Amorim said: “Every day is special, but of course, this was a very special win. To see our fans singing during the game, in one moment, the biggest rival, they are champions on their field, in their stadium.

“This win is all about our fans and the spirit of the team – because I believe that we can play so much better. We will try to analyse the game in the same way that we analyse the other ones.

“Try to see the good things and the bad things, but for me the special thing is the togetherness that they showed during this game. That is special for me.”

Slot, however, will not have the same break that United have been afforded ahead of their next match-up. That’s because Liverpool return to the fold to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

When asked if the current run of poor form has had an impact on his confidence as a manager following a loss to United, the Dutchman said: “I think as a manager you face constantly challenges. When I just started, you face the challenge of being a new manager and then you need to win games.

“Then when you do well you go to a bigger club and people are like; ‘Oh, let’s see how he does over there.’ Then you go to be the successor of Jurgen Klopp and people say this is the biggest challenge you ever faced. Now we have lost four times in a row and that’s also a challenge.

“So, the life of a football manager is an ongoing challenge. If you win games you want to keep winning, if you lose games you want to start winning again. Do we lose confidence? I can’t see it yet, because every single game we’ve lost, we were able to create in the second half an unbelievable amount of chances.

“If you look back at all the three games we’ve lost in the Premier League, if you just put all the highlights [next to] each other, you would say it’s hardly possible that they lose this game. So if we can keep producing what we are doing and do a few things a little bit better, then there is every reason to expect that we will start to win football games again.

“But I can’t promise you that on Wednesday evening we are again able to create eight, nine or 10 open chances. I hope so – and with the players we have then it will lead in the end to us scoring more goals.”
