Lawns will be greener and ready for cold weather in 7 days if you do 1 task now

As the UK heads into autumn, there’s one simple lawn care task that can help your grass to thrive throughout winter and beyond – and it only takes a few minutes

This week marks the start of autumn across the UK, and with a crisp chill now in the air, it can be tricky to determine which gardening tasks are still left to do.

However, when it comes to your lawn, there’s one crucial job that can ensure it thrives throughout the winter months and beyond.

Putting in the effort at this stage will result in a more vibrant and healthier lawn later on, especially following the dormant winter season.

The Mediterranean Gardener on TikTok has shared that feeding your grass is a chore that homeowners frequently overlook.

But neglecting to complete this before the cold weather arrives means your lawn might appear ‘rubbish’ when spring returns, reports the Express.

Michael encouraged gardeners to undertake this job ‘now’ if you want to preserve your lawn ahead of winter. Luckily, it’s not a complex chore, and you won’t require much kit either.

You’ll simply need a packet of autumn grass feed, and ensure it’s designed for this time of year – not summer varieties, as these won’t be effective.

It contains more potassium, so when you spread it, you won’t encourage masses of tender growth on top. This could lead to your grass becoming ‘battered’ during frosty conditions.

Michael explained: “Instead, it toughens up the roots, making your lawn more resilient for the colder weather to come.”

You don’t need a spreader to apply the feed either, as it’s straightforward to manage by hand.

The best time to tackle this is between September and November, ahead of the truly cold winter conditions. Once you’ve nourished your grass, you should begin to see it appearing more vibrant within just seven days.

But that’s not all – Michael explained: “More importantly, it’ll be ready for winter.”

Another gardening task that’s absolutely crucial to complete during autumn involves clearing away any foliage that settles on your turf.

Dropped leaves can build up on the grass and prevent sunlight from reaching it, which is vital for proper development.

The experts at Love The Garden say that these spare leaves can prove incredibly useful for enhancing other areas of your outdoor space.

They explained: “If you have space, store the collected leaves in a pile or in black plastic bags somewhere out of sight.

“In a year or two, they will break down into leaf mould, which is fantastic for mulching borders.”
