Lawns will be ‘greener and thicker’ with kitchen scrap item that is like ‘magic’

Coffee grounds are a useful waste product that can be put to work in the garden, and experts have explained how they can be used to make the perfect lawn

Lawns truly are the pride of most gardens as countless homeowners strive to achieve that coveted lush emerald grass, especially during the summer months.

Fertiliser doesn’t just encourage your grass to flourish, it also cultivates an area that can endure nature’s challenges and stand the test of time. A healthy lawn serves as your primary shield against pests, diseases, and environmental pressures. According to the experts at The Lawn Squad, coffee isn’t merely a morning necessity for humans, it’s also “essential” for lawns.

They explained: “Nitrogen-rich coffee grounds can be sprinkled on the lawn or mixed with water (about half a pound of coffee grounds to five gallons of water) to create a nutrient-packed lawn tonic”.

The turf specialists at Turf Technologies concurred: “Not only can coffee revitalise us in the morning, it can also revitalise our lawns. For us, it’s the caffeine that does the magic. For your lawn, it’s the minerals coffee contains – nitrogen and phosphorus – that does the magic.”

It’s not the caffeine that encourages vigorous grass development, but rather the nitrogen, phosphorus and trace minerals that coffee grounds possess.

There are numerous advantages when it comes to utilising coffee grounds on your lawn. A major one is that avoids the same adverse effects that come from artificial fertiliser. Improper use of artificial fertiliser can cause catastrophic consequences like scorching the lawn or polluting water through runoff.

Additionally, coffee grounds also act as slow-release fertilisers, unlike most synthetic alternatives, reports the Express. The specialists noted: “This allows your lawn to benefit from the nutrients for a longer period of time, ensuring greener, thicker and stronger turf for longer.”

What’s more, worms adore coffee grounds. They consume the grounds and in exchange aerate the lawn with their castings, which loosens the soil and further encourages grass growth.

One method to apply coffee grounds to lawns is to simply scatter them across the surface and leave them where they land. The worms will gradually break them down or they’ll eventually get distributed when you cut the grass.

Lightly rake or brush them out so there aren’t any thick clumps on the turf. You can alternatively use a container with holes pierced through the base or a spreader to scatter the grounds.

Reapply the coffee ground lawn feed every month or two afterwards to encourage a lush and healthy garden.
