A glamorous lawyer has been left comatose for months after she was involved in a horror accident while trying to take a selfie on her bike. Daiane Vasconcelos has been in hospital for four months after she was flung off her bicycle when it hit a bumper as she tried to take a selfie.
The 31-year-old mum-of-one sustained sustained a traumatic brain injury and went into cardiac arrest after falling from the bike and hitting her head in Campo Grande, in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, on December 8, 2024. Doctors were able to save her life, but she has remained in a coma ever since.
According to witnesses, she had been cycling alone in the late afternoon when she braked sharply after encountering a speed bump while trying to take a photo and fell.
Daiane, who has a 14-year-old son, spent the first two months hospitalised but was later moved to her home, where she is being cared for by family members.
Her son currently lives with his father, while her mother Vilma Rocha Abreu and her friend Marcela Leal care for her at a small studio flat. They were forced to move the mum there after her treatment costs rose.
The family said doctors had to perform facial reconstruction surgery after the bone in Daiane’s left eye was damaged and her chin was broken. They said that, while the surgery was successful, the family still faces an “agonising wait” to see improvement in the mum’s comatose condition.
They wrote: “Prayers during the day, night, dawn, the agonizing wait to see an improvement, a positive evolution, the hope and faith of awakening.”
Before the accident, Daiane used to frequently post legal tips and snaps of her fitness routine on Instagram, but her account is now being used by her family to help raise funds for her expensive treatment.
Friend Marcela said that, in addition to the ongoing monthly expenses, Daiane needs special equipment to aid in her recovery and improve her clinical condition.
The fundraiser, posted on fundraising site Vaqinha, has already surpassed its desired goal, with R21.645,14 (£2,848.50) raised of R20,000 (£2,632). Marcela adds that “any assistance is greatly appreciated”, with the fundraising page detailing the family’s devastation following Daiane’s accident on December 8.
They said in a statement: “Daiane is the breadwinner of her own home. With a 14-year-old son, the foundation of her home, she had at least two jobs to keep up with the expenses. The 8th brought our lives to a standstill, but the bills continued.
“We need your help! In addition to the monthly expenses, Daiane now needs special items to help with the evolution of her clinical condition.”
