Leicester: Police at scene after vehicle reported to have hit multiple pedestrians

Two more people have been arrested after a car reportedly ploughed into several pedestrians in Leicester city centre during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Four people – two men and two women – were taken to hospital, three of whom sustained serious injuries. The incident occurred shortly after 12.30am on De Montfort Street following a report of a fight in the same location. A 31-year-old man from Leicester was initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and causing serious injury by dangerous driving following the collision. He remains in police custody.

On Saturday afternoon, following extensive enquiries, two other men have been arrested. A 28-year-old man, from Leicester, has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and causing serious injury by dangerous driving following the collision. The second man, a 34-year-old, also from Leicester, has been arrested on suspicion of affray. They are both in police custody.

Officers believe the suspects and the four victims involved in the collision had all atteneded at a private event nearby prior to the incident. The car involved was later discovered abandoned in a nearby Margaret Street and has been seized as part of the investigation. On Saturday, a large police cordon was placed around De Montfort Street as enquiries, including forensic investigations, were carried out.

Leicestershire Police said they have been working to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the collision, and have urged members of the public not speculate about the incident, including on social media, to allow their investigation to continue.

Detective Inspector Jenny Tattersall said: “We have been working tirelessly today to understand the sequence of events and how the incidents of the early hours occurred. The cordon was in place for much of today to allow for thorough investigations to be carried out, including the attendance of forensic officers. This has now been lifted.

“We do continue to ask that people do not speculate about this incident, including on social media, in order to allow our investigation to continue. We will continue to provide updates and information as and when we are able to. Officers will remain in the area on foot patrol offering reassurance. Please do speak with them regarding any information you may have or any concerns you may have.

“If you have any information, you can also contact police on 101, quoting incident number 27 of 31 May.”
