Lewis Burton’s heartbreaking vow to Caroline Flack in first message after she died

Lewis Burton doesn’t appear in the new Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth documentary – but it’s believed he will speak out to give his side of the story soon

Lewis Burton made a heartbreaking promise to Caroline Flack in his first public message following her tragic death.

The former tennis star told Caroline he would ‘get all the answers’ for her. Love Island host Caroline passed away on 15 February 2020 at the age of just 40 after taking her own life.

Posting on Instagram a day after the news broke, a heartbroken Lewis – who had been dating Caroline for seven months at the time she died – shared a photo of them on holiday with her arms wrapped around him and wrote: “My heart is broken, we had something so special.”

He continued: “I am so lost for words. I am in so much pain. I miss you so much. I know you felt safe with me. You always said I don’t think about anything else when I am with you. And I was not allowed to be there this time. I kept asking and asking.

“I will be your voice baby. I promise I will ask all the questions you wanted and I will get all the answers. Nothing will bring you back but I will try make you proud everyday.” He ended the post by with a broken heart emoji and the words: “I love you with all my heart.”

The ex-professional tennis player was 27 when he began dating Caroline back in July 2019. Now 33, he is engaged to Lottie Tomlinson, the 27-year-old sister of One Direction star Louis Tomlinson. The couple are also parents to two children, a three-year-old son named Lucky who was born in August 2022 and 11-month-old daughter Flossie, who was born in January 2025.

As a new documentary about Caroline’s death and the court case leading up to it was aired on Disney+, Lewis has found his former relationship thrust back into the spotlight. He does not appear in the documentary, although the director and producer said Lewis was approached several times but declined to be interviewed.

Five years on from her suicide, Caroline’s heartbroken mother Christine Flack is seeking answers about her daughter’s death, which she believes could have been avoided.

It details the night of December 12, 2019, when Caroline and Lewis had been out drinking separately. They came back to her North London flat and went to bed. But an argument broke out when Caroline found texts from another woman on Lewis’ phone as he slept.

Caroline’s lawyer Paul Morris said Caroline tried to wake Lewis up by hitting him with his phone after her “worst fears” were confirmed. After noticing his head was bleeding, Lewis threatened to call police, which he later did. When they arrived Caroline had cut her own wrists and needed hospital treatment.

She was arrested and held in a cell but told she would only be given a caution. However, her mum Christine discovered a detective then appealed to the Crown Prosecution Service to push ahead with charges against Caroline, known as Carrie to her close friends and family.

It was the knowledge she would be charged with assault by beating – and being publicly branded a domestic abuser – that set Caroline, who already struggled with her mental health privately, off on a downwards spiral that ultimately ended in her tragic suicide when she learned the case would go to trial.

Now it’s believed Lewis will say something about his ex-girlfriend as he vowed to “clarify the situation” after the new documentary was released. In a statement on Instagram, Lewis said: “Out of respect, I’ve chosen to remain silent. However, the false accusations and online abuse directed toward me and my family has gone too far. I had hoped it would never come to this, but now I have no choice but to clarify the situation and share the truth.” Though he is yet to give more detail on his version of events.
