Lewis Capaldi’s drummer left ‘in floods of tears’ after his Glastonbury comeback

Singer Lewis Capaldi made a huge return to the spotlight last month as he performed a secret set at Glastonbury after taking two years away from music for his health

Lewis Capaldi has revealed his drummer was left in tears after he made his sensational return to Glastonbury. The chart-topping singer, 28, performed a secret set at Worthy Farm this year, which came two years on from him struggling with Tourettes at the festival.

He made a huge comeback for a 35-minute show on the iconic Pyramid Stage, marking his return to performing after a two year break. Lewis confessed he had planned to quit music all together despite his huge success after his show at Glastonbury in 2023.

In a change of heart, Lewis agreed to head back to the world famous festival and despite it being a secret set, he told his fans in advance as he was worried nobody would turn up.

“I’m not great at keeping secrets, I wanted it to be a surprise, but we had to start leaking it out a couple of weeks before because it would have been strange to come out to an empty field,” he confessed on the Apple Music’s Music That Soothes Me series.

“By that weekend it was the worst-kept secret. It was genuinely the best day of my life, I loved every moment of it.” Revealing just how emotional the moment was for him, Lewis added: “Almost immediately, I was overcome with emotion and I started to well up, so I was like, ‘get it together’, but then I turned around and looked at my drummer, and he was in floods of tears.

“It was weird, I knew it was going to be fine this time around. I had nerves and butterflies, but it wasn’t the same as 2023 when I was so stressed and I knew something bad was going to happen. It was spectacular.”

While on the iconic stage, Lewis performed his new tune titled Survive. The deeply personal track about his mental health struggles and recovery sees the singer urge fans to access the same type of support he had on his road to recovery.

Speaking of his 2023 Pyramid Stage performance, Lewis said: “I was on complete autopilot. I watch it back and I feel sad. I wasn’t taking anything in.”

He thanked those helping him through it, saying they “made it a much less embarrassing moment”. Lewis added: “The thing that I wanted to do the most has made me feel the worst. It was like a weird mix of emotions.”

He went on on say that while others see the clip from the day as uplifting as the crowd helped him through, he sees it as him “just having literally the worst moment of his life”.

In the chat with BetterHelp, filmed days before his surprise return, Lewis added how he thought he was “done indefinitely” with the music industry.

He said: “I didn’t take a break to just focus on getting better, I took a break because I needed a break and to sort of like release the pressure valve a little bit.”

Lewis added: “Therapy has been a massive part of the reason why I’m able to be a musician again. This feels such a positive way to help others access the type of support I needed.”
