A touch of fizzy pop could make your bathroom glow again.
Bathrooms can quickly become a breeding ground for limescale and mould if not kept clean and well-ventilated.
Caused by the buildup of mineral deposits, limescale not only tarnishes the appearance of our bathrooms, it can also significantly increase the risk of health issues. To help keep bathrooms clean for less, an expert from Wholesale Domestic has shared an inexpensive way homeowners can banish limescale for good using one rather unusual ingredient.
Adding a touch of the fizzy favourite, Coca-Cola, to your cleaning routine could see a dramatic difference in the appearance of your taps, showerheads, drains and other areas where limescale builds up. The beverage could be your secret weapon for shiny sinks and showers, costing just a few pence a ‘pop.’

Speaking about the dangers of limescale, Brian Toward, home improvement specialist and CEO of leading bathroom retailer, Wholesale Domestic, explained: “While limescale itself isn’t directly harmful to health, it can cause the growth of bacteria, compromising water quality. Limescale can also build up in pipes and restrict water flow, leading to decreased water pressure and plumbing issues, which can be costly if left untreated.
“Most people are shocked that Coca-Cola can help dissolve limescale but it can as it contains phosphoric acid. Pour Coca-Cola onto the affected areas and let it sit for several hours or overnight. Then, scrub the area with a brush and rinse.”
Mould is another concern that homeowners can struggle to successfully eradicate without the right tools. Brian added: “Mould can quickly grow as black spots or patches in damp and poorly ventilated areas such as bathrooms. Beyond its unpleasant appearance, it releases allergens into the air, which can trigger respiratory issues, allergies, and asthma attacks.”
While white vinegar has become a bit of a “cure-all” for many home cleaning dilemmas, the expert has some other unconventional methods that can be applied throughout the home to help prevent unwanted mould and limescale. These include:
Tea tree oil solution
Toward explained: “Tea tree oil has natural antifungal properties, making it an effective remedy for cleaning mould. Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with water in a spray bottle and generously apply it to mouldy areas for an hour before wiping clean.”
Hydrogen peroxide spray
3% hydrogen peroxide can effectively kill mould spores and stop them from regrowing. Apply it to mould-infested surfaces for around 15 minutes before wiping clean with a damp cloth.
Lemon juice and salt
To help remove limescale cut a lemon in half and dip it in salt to create a natural scrubbing solution. The citric acid in lemon juice breaks down limescale, while the salt helps lift it off surfaces.
Vinegar and baking soda
Similar to lemon juice and salt, equal parts of white vinegar and baking soda can be mixed together to create a powerful paste that can remove limescale.
Toward says “Apply the paste to limescale-affected areas such as taps, showerheads, and tiles and let it sit for a few hours before scrubbing with a brush and rinsing thoroughly.”
