By staff23 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

The town has been crowned as the top spot Muddy Stilettos as one of best places to live in the UK, just a 30 minute rail journey from London and lots to enjoy in the bustling settlement

A delightful market town renowned for its period buildings, independent retailers and bustling community atmosphere boasts properties approximately £150k less expensive than London.

Situated merely a 30-minute rail journey from the capital, Hitchin is a Hertfordshire settlement that has earned recognition from Muddy Stilettos as amongst Britain’s finest places to reside.

The location is described by experts as a “super convenient commuter town” offering “history, character and a host of brilliant indies.” With more than 3,000 inhabitants, the town’s thriving culinary and beverage landscape, featuring numerous eateries, has received acclaim from specialists.

The settlement boasts a scenic town centre complete with cobblestone lanes, a bustling marketplace, and abundant coffee shops and public houses, reports the Express.

Key attractions include St Mary’s Church, amongst Hertfordshire’s largest parish churches, and the British Schools Museum, providing insight into Victorian schooling.

Hitchin presents an appealing and budget-friendly option to London living, with typical house values hovering around £510,000 – roughly £153,000 below the capital’s average, making it enticing for purchasers wanting excellent value in a dynamic community.

Its appeal stems from cobbled thoroughfares, verdant areas, and beloved destinations such as Hitchin Lavender and the open-air swimming facility, particularly during warmer months.

The community caters well to couples and families alike, providing a blend of private educational establishments and numerous top-rated primary and secondary institutions. Hitchin is a haven for coffee enthusiasts, boasting a variety of cafes such as Groundworks, Hitchin Coffee Lab, Fusey and Bear, and Wakelin and Son, which also serves as a vintage shop.

The town offers an abundance of dining options – local favourites include The Kite at Red Hart, The Victoria, Los Reyes, Hermitage Road, and Cantina Carnitas, all highly recommended by Muddy Stilettos.

For those seeking international cuisine, the monthly Hitchin Street Food event in the market square is a must-visit, offering a diverse range of dishes and a vibrant atmosphere that’s hard to resist.
