Former Liverpool player and manager Graeme Souness has provided his view on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s expected move from Anfield to Real Madrid when his contract expires
Graeme Souness believes Liverpool fans should give their blessing to Trent Alexander-Arnold if he quits Anfield for Real Madrid this summer. The Reds vice-captain is set to see his contract expire the end of the season.
More than 40 years after Souness decided to leave Anfield to join Sampdoria after captaining the Reds to the European Cup, the former Scottish international-turned-pundit feels Alexander-Arnold can move to Spain with his head held high once he helps Arne Slot ’s team clinch the Premier League title.
Souness feels his move to Italy, after six years with Liverpool that saw him win five title medals and three Euro crowns, improved him both on and off the pitch. And he said: “It was different for me. I was 31 and was leaving Liverpool having won a lot of trophies.
“I got a chance to what was, back then, the most lucrative league in the world. Italy was where all the best players were.

“For Trent it’s a different story. He’s 26 and he’s leaving his boyhood club. But he will come back a better-educated, more-rounded human being than what he is now.
“Going to another country, learning their culture, and seeing how they do things is good for you.
Trent won’t agree with everything he sees. But you take it all onboard and when you come back you try to implement the good things you have learned. He will be richer for the experience.
“I can’t be critical of him. He’s been at Liverpool since he was six, so he’s been a fabulous servant to the club he supports – and I think he’ll be a fantastic acquisition for Real Madrid.
“In golf terms, he’s got every club in the bag. He can pick a pass from 50 or 60 yards – and they will love him in Madrid.”
