Liverpool ‘make final decision’ on Marc Guehi January transfer swoop after deal collapse

Marc Guehi’s transfer deadline move to Liverpool fell apart at the last minute and questions have been asked about whether Liverpool will seek out a cut-price January swoop

Liverpool will wait until next summer before going back in for Marc Guehi, it has been claimed. The Reds saw a deadline day move for the centre-back collapse at the eleventh hour, with Crystal Palace keeping hold of their captain.

A fee of around £35milllion had been mentioned, with Guehi out of contract next summer. Liverpool are unlikely to be the only club in the mix when the England international is free to speak to potential suitors in the new year.

According to The Times, though, Liverpool have no plans to pursue a cut-price move in January. Guehi has no plans to extend his Palace contract, which expires next summer, and it appears the reigning Premier League champions are happy to wait.

Liverpool still have experienced duo Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate marshalling their defence, though Konate’s contract also expires next summer and he has been linked with Real Madrid. Joe Gomez is also still at Anfield, while Italian centre-back Giovanni Leoni completed a move from Parma in August.

Guehi is said to have been left angry at the manner in which his deal collapsed. He had gone as far as filming a goodbye message for Palace supporters, only for the London club to pull the plug amid a feeling from manager Oliver Glasner that there was not enough time left to land a suitable replacement.

“We had a meeting in March where we talked about the situation so again we know how the situation is and we have an agreement that we could sell Marc if we have the right replacement in,” Glasner said at the end of August. Palace did complete a deadline day move for Jaydee Canvot, but the French starlet is just 19 years old and has less than a full season of senior football under his belt.

“We wanted to have this replacement at the beginning of the pre-season to be independent from this situation,” Glasner continued. “That was on July 9 (the season started), it’s August 31 and there is no replacement in the building so it’s clear one part of the agreement is not fulfilled that means we can’t sell Marc.”

Guehi, who has remained a regular starter for Palace this season, was also in England’s starting XI to face Andorra on Saturday. He played 76 minutes alongside Dan Burn as the Three Lions won 2-0 to preserve their 100 percent record in World Cup qualfiying.

England travel to Serbia on Tuesday as they look to move one step closer to next summer’s tournament in Canada, Mexico in the United States. After that game, Guehi will return to London for Palace’s league match against Sunderland on Saturday.
