Liverpool news: Arne Slot handed double injury boost as two stars return to training

By staff12 September 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Liverpool’s players are back in training ahead of their clash with Burnley on Sunday when Arne Slot’s men will be looking to make it four wins out of four in the Premier League

Liverpool are gearing up for their return to Premier League action following the international break. Most of Arne Slot’s squad were off representing their countries last weekend but now they’re back on Merseyside to resume their title defence, which has got off to a successful start.

The Reds won all three of their opening games, beating Bournemouth, Newcastle and Arsenal. It means that Liverpool are the only side with a 100 per cent record, putting them two points clear at the top of the table at this early stage.

Burnley are the Reds’ next opponents, still reeling from their devastating 3-2 loss away to Manchester United. Scott Parker’s newly-promoted team paid the price for conceding a 97th-minute penalty, having come from behind twice at Old Trafford and gotten agonisingly close to earning a draw.

Liverpool will be wary that Burnley did manage to topple fast-starters Sunderland in their only home game so far in the league, while the Clarets also beat Derby County at Turf Moor in the Carabao Cup. Slot has never faced Burnley, so he’ll be glad to have an extra strong squad thanks to the arrival of Alexander Isak on transfer deadline day and two stars who’ve returned from injury.

Here’s a round-up of the latest news from Anfield.

Frimpong and Bajceticreturn to training

Liverpool have welcomed both Jeremie Frimpong and Stefan Bajcetic back into training after their respective spells on the sidelines. Frimpong, 24, missed the Netherlands’ two World Cup qualifiying fixtures, having missed Liverpool’s last two Premier League matches with a hamstring injury.

As for Bajcetic, the 20-year-old has been out for three months after having surgery on his hamstring. Bajcetic spent the second half of last season on loan at Spanish side Las Palmas.

Ballack: Wirtz made right transfer decision

Michael Ballack says that Florian Wirtz was right to snub Bayern Munich in favour of joining Liverpool. Back in 2006, Ballack signed for Bayern from Bayer Leverkusen, a move which Wirtz could’ve replicated this summer.

But the Leverkusen star opted to join Liverpool and Ballack agrees with Wirtz’s choice. “Would it have made sense for [Wirtz] and his development to play another two or three years in the Bundesliga with Bayern?” the German icon asked Sport Bild. “Of course, he would win championships there.

“But is the Bundesliga still the ultimate challenge for him at the highest level? No, because the Bundesliga was left behind by the Premier League years ago.”

Carragher receives special award

Athletic Bilbao have announced that Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is the 2025 recipient of their ‘One-Club Man’ award. Carragher, who spent his entire senior career with the Reds, will be handed the award in Bilbao when the Spanish side host Girona at San Memes on Tuesday, September 23.

“It was an honour when Athletic Club got in touch. Athletic are respected everywhere in the world of football. They’re a truly unique club,” Carragher said. “I’m very honoured to receive this award and to know my name will always remain alongside some great footballers like [previous winners] Paolo Maldini and Carles Puyol.
