Liverpool news: Klopp makes feelings clear on Wirtz as Gerrard triggers outrage

By staff13 October 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest news from Liverpool with Arne Slot’s side enduring a tough period in the 2025/2026 season.

After Liverpool won their first five games of the Premier League season, many fans around the country would have been forgiven for assuming that the Reds would go back-to-back in league titles this season. However, a loss to Crystal Palace at the end of September has kick-started a dismal three-game losing streak

A loss to Galatasary in the Champions League was swiftly followed by a 2-1 defeat against Chelsea in the Premier League, leaving Arne Slot’s players with their backs firmly up against the wall.

Some of the team’s biggest signings are yet to truly establish themselves in the team. Jeremie Frimpong, Milosz Kerkez, Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz were just some of the huge signings made during the summer, but none of those have truly proved they are worth the cash just yet.

Coming up next for Liverpool in the league is Manchester United on October 19. Ahead of this, Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest news coming out of Anfield.

Klopp speaks out on Wirtz

Jurgen Klopp has backed new signing Wirtz to prosper at Liverpool and has described him as a “once in a century talent”.

Although his general play has been good, Wirtz has not yet registered a goal or an assist. As a result, he has been at the centre of a barrage of online criticism due to his £116m price tag.

Speaking to RTL and n-tv, Klopp said: “I don’t have to worry about Florian Wirtz because his quality is so outstanding. Of course, everything is fine and everyone knows that. The discussion is certainly being blown out of proportion.

“Liverpool have just lost three games in a row – it’s unusual for something like that to happen after such a long time. But it’s also normal in life. That’s why these things are discussed. I’ve been in the middle of such discussions long enough now and I can tell you: nothing could interest people less than the public discussions that are taking place there. So it doesn’t matter and everything will be fine.”

Gerrard triggers outrage

Steve Gerrard has triggered outrage amongst Rangers fans after rejecting the offer to return as manager.

The Liverpool legend held talks following Russell Martin’s departure, but withdrew from the interview process over the weekend. His rejection has prompted an emotional reaction from fans on the Record Sport Hotline.

One fan said: “I didn’t want Gerrard back as the last time he jumped ship before he was pushed. He’s now been sacked from two clubs and Rangers were throwing him a life jacket as no-one else wanted him.”

Another added: “It’s no surprise that Stevie G turned the job down. No manager in their right mind would enter such a toxic environment and take over a team laden with duds.”

Real reason for Guehi collapse

Chairman Steve Parish says the real reason Marc Guehi’s move to Liverpool collapsed was due to it being the London club’s first campaign in Europe. Guehi’s contract is running out in the summer and he will be free to negotiate contracts with new clubs from January 1. Speaking to talkSPORT, Parish clarified why Guehi stayed put.

“I decided in the end,” Parish told talkSPORT. “That based on the advice that I got and with what I think, that we would have a better season if we kept Marc.

“We don’t guess about these things. If you look at it rationally, if you look at what is worth the place in the Premier League, the fact that we’re in the Conference League for the first time in our history, this is a fairly unusual set of circumstances in which to keep a player.”
