Liverpool take firm view on future Marc Guehi transfer after deadline day deal collapses

Liverpool ended up missing out on a deadline day deal for Marc Guehi after Crystal Palace decided to pull the plug on a transfer at the eleventh hour in a dramatic twist

Liverpool are expected to revisit their interest in Marc Guehi when the transfer window reopens after Crystal Palace pulled the plug on a deadline day move for the England star.

Guehi, 25, is in the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park and has been heavily linked with the Premier League champions in recent months. It emerged over the weekend that the clubs were once again in contact over a deal for the central defender and a £35million fee was agreed on deadline day.

Unfortunately, late drama ensued with Palace encountering difficulties in their bid to sign defensive reinforcements; Julio Igor decided to pull out of a loan move in order to pursue a switch to West Ham, leaving Jaydee Canvot as their only defensive incoming. Palace subsequently decided against sanctioning Guehi’s exit – even though he had undertaken part of his medical.

While Guehi will not be running out at Anfield anytime soon, The Mail have confirmed that he remains a player of interest to Liverpool, who are likely to try and sign him again in January or next summer, when Guehi would be a free agent.

The Reds fared better in their pursuit of Alexander Isak, who completed a British record £125m move to Anfield late on deadline day. But he was not joined by Guehi, even though a dealsheet giving both clubs until 9pm to finalise a deal was requested.

Oliver Glasner, the Eagles head coach, has made no secret of his desire to keep Guehi at the club beyond the transfer window. He doubled down on that stance following the exit of Eberechi Eze, who joined Arsenal in a £67.5million deal last week. Speaking after Guehi scored in the 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday, Glasner said: “We have to (keep Guehi) if we want to play a successful season… we need Marc.

“It is not possible within one day to find a replacement who can play immediately in the Premier League. When you see our defensive set-up, this is our foundation, everybody knows exactly what he has to do, everybody can rely on each other. Marc isn’t a small part in this, he’s our captain.

“We have to keep him. I told this to the chairman. It’s not for me.”
