Liverpool’s stance on Alexander Isak transfer after seeing swap offer ‘dismissed’

By staff8 March 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Liverpool are among the teams who are plotting an ambitious swoop for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak in the summer transfer window as Arne Slot eyes a new No.9

Liverpool are interested in signing Alexander Isak, although it’s been suggested that Newcastle have already ‘dismissed’ the idea of signing Darwin Nunez in exchange.

The Reds are expected to be in the market for a new No.9 at the end of the season in the wake of Nunez’s struggles in front of goal this term, with the Uruguay international scoring just six times.

Nunez, 25, joined Liverpool for big-money back in the summer of 2022. But he has struggled to have the type of impact Isak has had at St. James’ Park since arriving in England during the same transfer window.

Arsenal and Liverpool have both been credited with an interest in Isak in recent weeks – and the latter’s admiration of the player has now been confirmed by The Athletic.

Liverpool are far from the only club who fancy signing Isak, although numerous reports have stressed that Newcastle are determined to keep hold of their star striker and are planning contract talks at the end of the season.

It was also noted in the Q&A session that the Reds would only consider firming up their interest in the Swede if he is ‘genuinely available’ for transfer.

Intriguingly, The Chronicle revealed earlier this week that Newcastle are among the clubs who are likely to be offered the chance to sign Nunez for £60million in the summer.

That would indicate that Liverpool are ready to cut their losses on the former Benfica man. However, the report went on to add that the ‘wild’ proposal of Newcastle getting Nunez plus cash for Isak has already been ‘dismissed out of hand’.

While Liverpool are likely to monitor Isak’s situation in the hope of potentially luring the striker to Anfield, Newcastle’s chief executive, Darren Eales, has stressed that Isak and the club’s other top talent are on long-term contracts, putting the club in a strong position.

“The reality is that all of our players are under long-term deals,” Eales said, per The i Paper. “They’re committed to the club. So, from that perspective, we’re not looking to move any player on. We’ve got that wish and desire to keep our key players [and] we’re not under the gun [to sell] or anything like that.

“We’ve got an ownership that is ambitious [and] wants the best for the club. So from that perspective, it’d be crazy for us to consider it.”
