Liz Truss slams beloved UK event claiming it was made by people who ‘hate Britain’

Liz Truss has slammed the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony, claiming it was made by people who “hate Britain.”

The former Prime Minister, who was ousted after 49 days, claimed the performance, watched and beloved by millions, was out of touch with the views of Brits.

She’d been asked by hard right podcaster Ben Shapiro whether she agreed with the NHS being such a focus of the celebration of the best of British.

And she managed to take a swipe at the NHS, Isembard Kingdom Brunel, Shakespeare, Peter Pan, Jerusalem, Mary Poppins, Elgar, Pink Floyd, The Clash, James Bond and the Queen all in one sentence.

“The views expressed in the Olympic ceremony are not those of the average Briton,” Ms Truss replied.

She added: “The problem is we have an elite that hates Britain, and they have done for some time.

And that is the history of Jeremy Corbyn, Keir Starmer.

They want to help the human rights of anybody who doesn’t live in Britain but they’re very reticent to defend our own interests.”

In 2013, Ms Truss said praised the ceremony for having “seamlessly combined Isambard Kingdom Brunel and William Shakespeare, Tim Berners-Lee and Mary Poppins.”

And in 2019 she called for the “spirit of the 2012 Olympics – a modern, patriotic, enterprising vision of Britain” to be revived.

Ms Truss has been eager to build a profile in the US in recent years – appearing at a number of conferences and giving interviews to a string of pro-Trump outlets.

In 2024, she failed to challenge host Steve Bannon, formerly a Trump advisor, on his claim that Tommy Robinson is a “hero”.

A year later, she again appeared on Bannon’s podcast, just hours after he’d been accused of giving a nazi salute at a MAGA rally.

At the same conference, she sat down for an interview with the Epoch Times, a far-right media organisation affiliated with the Falun Gong religious movement.

Ben Shapiro, a prominent conservative commentator, has made a string of controversial statements, including claiming transgender people have a “mental illness”.
