Louis Rees-Zammit made his NFL debut on Saturday night, playing in his first-ever American football game as the Kansas City Chiefs used him in four different roles
Louis Rees-Zammit, the ex-rugby star turned American football newcomer, flexed his athletic prowess during his debut in the NFL preseason, showing remarkable versatility for the Kansas City Chiefs as he executed a variety of roles.
In what was a tremendous leap from rugby fields to the NFL spotlight, the Welsh sportsman featured as both running back and wide receiver for the Chiefs after working hard in offseason workouts and training camp. Saturday’s outing marked Rees-Zammit’s first-ever competitive appearance on the American football stage, giving him a chance to shine in an actual game scenario.
Despite a modest gain of just four yards in his first game, Rees-Zammit took pride in his on-field exploits, participating as running back, kicker, and upback. He also tried his hand at receiving, all the while noting areas for personal development as he made it clear he loved the experience after making the brave career switch.
“It was a great first experience,” Rees-Zammit reflected when chatting to The Irish NFL Show post-game on Saturday. “I loved it, I loved getting the snaps I did, on special teams as well which was great. I’ve just got to look back on this, review it and see how I can get better.
“I got a little kick-off, that was great, being able to play special teams is amazing. To be able to exploit different skills. But yeah, I’m happy. I’ll see how I can get better and take it onto the next game.
“The atmosphere was great, it was pretty electric in the stadium and there was a load of Chiefs fans, which helped massively. It was a great game and I’m looking forward to the next one.”
While the Chiefs currently see Rees-Zammit as a potential running back, his long-term position in the NFL is still up for debate, with many speculating that he would be best suited as a wide receiver. The former rugby winger’s strengths lie in his speed and explosiveness, rather than his power as a runner.
At 6’2 and weighing just 205lbs, Rees-Zammit’s stats seem to align more with those of a receiver. However, as he is new to American football, it may take him some time to learn how to run routes effectively.
The running back position could provide an easier way for him to get the ball in his hands. His next chance to prove himself will be in the upcoming game against the Detroit Lions this weekend.
