Louis Vuitton’s lip balm divides the internet as it costs more than most people’s council tax

Louis Vuitton is known as a luxury powerhouse – and now they’ve entered the world of beauty with their debut makeup line, but people aren’t impressed. It’s no secret the french designer label is pricey, but shoppers have been left gobsmacked at the price of the lip balm and lipsticks.

Usually known for dominating the luxury accessory department, Louis Vuitton have just launched a brand new beauty collection called La Beauté – but fans are slamming it as “tone deaf”.

Featuring 55 lipsticks (a nod to the LV Roman numerals), 10 lip balms, and eight quad eyeshadow palettes, each product comes in collectible, refillable Louis Vuitton packaging – and you can already see it featuring in aesthetic Instagrammable makeup posts.

The products are created in collaboration with makeup legend Dame Pat McGrath, owner of Pat McGrath Labs and celebrity loved MUA who said: “Working backstage for over 20 years at Louis Vuitton fashion shows, I am thrilled to now play such a key role in the launch of La Beauté Louis Vuitton, which is the result of extraordinary [craftsmanship], creativity and innovation.”

Fans are shocked at the price of the lipsticks

She uniquely crafted” each shade, suitable for all skin tones, and a mixture of matte and satin finishes and added: “The beauty universe is about so much more than just product, and what we are creating here will unlock a new level in luxury beauty.”

It’s not unsual for high end luxury brands to launch beauty products, as Dior, Chanel, YSL and Gucci are all in the makeup world, but they make their products somewhat a little more affordable than their clothing and accessories. A Chanel lipstick is priced around £37.

However, Louis Vuitton have kept to their high end price tag – with their lipstick and lip balms costing £120 a pop and fans are confused, with many not wanting to normalise the extortionate price tag. One person joked: “That price better include a handbag with it too,” while another comment on the announcement post on social media: “Absolutely tone deaf and honestly desperate looking. This brings nothing of worth to the beauty table, just yet another logo-cashing venture to be dispensed to influencers for TikTok posting.”

“I think it’s a good time we as customers show and teach those brands that WE ARE NOT STUPID to pay extravagant prices, especially for makeup that expires. Remember, makeup is more about your skills than the product itself”, another wrote.

While lipstick already has a shorter shelf life, we’ve found some alternatives that can help keep the cost down, including MAC Macximal Silky Matte Lipstick (£21) from Boots that does the exact same, availble in a range of shades and lasts just as long. With full coverage, the matte formula you know and love is upgraded to a silkier, smoother texture in pigment-rich hues – from iconic to new.

Alternatively, e.l.f. O Face Satin Lipstick Vocal (£10) from Superdrug is another option. A satin-finish lipstick that delivers all the rich color you’re craving in a comfortable formula that lasts.

Charlotte Tilbury have also released the Hot Lips 2 Dancefloor Princess lipsticks (£30). A moisturising pop-pink lipstick for the perfect satin-finish pout. Encased in a magical refillable tube.
